AI and Chip Stocks Drive CSI 300 to Record 10-Week Losing Streak

China's blue-chip index falls for a 10th straight week

The CSI 300, an index that tracks large companies listed in mainland China, fell 3.4% last week. That was its 10th weekly loss in a row, the longest losing streak since the index was created in 2005.

The declines are being led by chipmakers and artificial intelligence companies that had driven a rally in Chinese stocks during the spring. AI refers to computer systems that perform tasks normally needing human intelligence.

Key numbers behind the sell-off

  • The CSI 300 lost 3.4% last week, its 10th consecutive weekly decline.
  • The STAR 50 index, which is more than 30% made up of five AI companies, has lost 40% of its value since June 30.
  • The previous record for consecutive weekly losses was set in January 2012.
  • From their peaks this year, the Shanghai Composite, Shenzhen Component, and CSI 300 have fallen 12%, 28%, and 17%.
  • An index made up only of AI stocks has declined 35% since its peak this year.
  • The CSI All Share Semiconductors index has drawn down 45%.
  • Foreign investors pulled more than $13 billion from mainland stocks through Hong Kong in the third quarter, the largest outflow in 12 months.
  • The CSI 300 is trading 30% below its February 2021 high.

Where the selling is heaviest

Semiconductor shares had the biggest boom in the first half of the year and have fallen the hardest in the second half. The CSI All Share Semiconductors index is down 45% from its high this year.

Bloomberg reported that no other major technology index in the world has performed worse than the STAR 50 since July 1.

Foreign money moves out

Foreign investors withdrew more than $13 billion from mainland stocks via Hong Kong in the third quarter. That was the largest outflow in the past 12 months and reversed more than half of the money those stocks received in the spring quarter.

What is confirmed

Index data shows the CSI 300 fell 3.4% last week for a 10th straight weekly loss, and that this streak is longer than the previous record set in January 2012. Index figures also show the STAR 50 down 40% since June 30, the Shanghai Composite, Shenzhen Component, and CSI 300 down 12%, 28%, and 17% from their 2026 peaks, an AI-only index down 35% from its peak, and the CSI All Share Semiconductors index down 45%.

What is still unclear

The source does not explain the underlying causes of the decline or provide any forecast for what happens next. It also does not say when the selling might stop or how long the streak could continue.

Why it matters

The CSI 300's 10-week losing streak is a record for the index. The declines are concentrated in the AI and chip sectors that had led gains earlier in the year, showing how quickly leadership in a rally can reverse.
