AI Coding Agents Spark 14-Fold Surge in Bitcoin Integration Requests

AI Coding Agents Spark 14-Fold Surge in Bitcoin Integration Requests

Partnership requests jump 14 times as AI coders discover Bitcoin

Bitcoin software company Breez said its request volume from developers and their AI coding agents has risen roughly 14-fold since AI-powered coding tools became widely used.

The surge began after Anthropic's Claude Code launched as a research preview in February 2025 and became generally available three months later. The company tied the spike directly to that timeline in a blog post published in October 2026.

Before 2025, most partnership inquiries came from three groups: committed Bitcoin enthusiasts, crypto developers, and fintech firms that view Bitcoin as an investment asset. Now Breez is hearing from teams building apps in entirely unrelated fields.

Fitness apps, messaging platforms and more want Bitcoin payments

Breez reported requests from fitness apps, messaging platforms that want users to send money to each other, an eSIM service for travelers, and a team behind a mushroom-identification app.

The company said many of these developers choose Bitcoin for speed. Setting up traditional payment acceptance — including opening a bank account and arranging cross-border transfers — can take weeks or months. Breez said its software development kit, a tool that lets programmers add Bitcoin payments to their apps, can be running within minutes.

AI agents are now submitting the requests themselves

A growing share of Breez's inquiries no longer come from people. The company said it regularly fields requests from software agents writing on behalf of the companies that deploy them.

Breez argues agents favor Bitcoin because it is permissionless, meaning it does not require approval from a central authority. An agent can build an app and set up payments for users worldwide without opening a bank account, passing identity checks, or filling out paperwork.

"Bitcoin is agnostic about whether the code of its current owner and user is composed of DNA base pairs or weights in a neural net," Breez wrote in its blog post.

The same lack of gatekeeping has drawn scrutiny from financial regulators, who require traditional payment providers to verify their customers' identities.

Breez says infrastructure is handling the growth

Breez said its newest software development kit implementation, built on Spark — a Bitcoin scaling protocol designed to enable faster and cheaper payments — handled the added volume without issues.

The company framed the shift as a follow-up to investor Marc Andreessen's 2011 essay arguing that software is eating the world, saying AI is now eating software. It compared Bitcoin's role to background infrastructure like electrical sockets and subsea communications cables.

  • Partnership inquiries rose roughly 14 times after AI coding agents became widespread
  • Claude Code launched in February 2025 and drove much of the early surge
  • New inquiries now come from non-crypto sectors like fitness, messaging and travel apps
  • Many requests are submitted by AI agents rather than human developers
  • Breez's latest SDK, built on the Spark scaling protocol, handled the increased volume

What Breez says about agent-driven adoption

In its company blog post, Breez described the trend as a structural shift in who is choosing to integrate Bitcoin into new software. The company said the permissionless nature of Bitcoin aligns well with autonomous agents that operate without traditional financial onboarding.

Why this matters for Bitcoin adoption

The shift signals that Bitcoin is moving beyond its traditional user base of crypto enthusiasts and institutional investors into everyday app development. If AI coding agents continue to select Bitcoin as a default payment layer, it could accelerate integration into software categories that have little historical connection to cryptocurrency.

What remains unclear

Breez provided the 14-fold increase figure and qualitative examples of new developer verticals, but did not disclose exact numbers of inquiries, conversion rates into live integrations, or how long the surge has persisted. It is also unconfirmed whether other Bitcoin infrastructure providers are seeing similar trends.
