Aztec Tierra upgrade fixes critical bug and speeds up Ethereum deposits
Aztec, a privacy-focused layer-2 network built on Ethereum, has launched a major upgrade called Aztec Tierra, also known as Alpha V6. The Aztec Foundation announced the release on Tuesday. It fixes a critical security flaw found in the previous version, makes private transactions faster, and comes with a set of new apps designed to keep user data hidden.
A layer-2 is a network built on top of Ethereum that processes transactions separately, usually making them cheaper and faster.
Key points from the Tierra launch
- The upgrade fixes known vulnerabilities from earlier versions, including a critical issue discovered in V5.
- Private transactions now generate client-side proofs in about one second on a standard device, twice as fast as before. A proof is a cryptographic check that a transaction followed the rules without revealing its details.
- A new architecture cuts Ethereum-to-Aztec message delivery from an average of two minutes to as little as 12 seconds, which speeds up deposits and cross-chain activity.
- Core cryptographic components have undergone formal verification, a mathematical process for proving that code behaves as intended.
- The upgrade includes an AI-powered security testing harness.
What the Aztec Foundation announced
The Aztec Foundation said Tierra delivers stronger security, formal verification of its proving system, faster deposits from Ethereum, and a refreshed brand. The network is decentralized with more than 3,000 validators, and the team says it has no privileged viewing keys or centralized sequencer. That means, according to Aztec, no single operator can view or control user activity.
Zac Williamson, co-founder and CEO of the Aztec Foundation, said in a statement: “Privacy shouldn’t be something you have to request or trust someone else to protect. It should be built into the network.”
Private apps launching alongside Tierra
The upgrade arrives with a group of private applications covering payments, trading, AI, and social use. The leading app is zk.money, a private payments and savings app built by Aztec Labs that the team revived this year. With Tierra’s faster messaging, users can deposit directly from any Ethereum wallet without complex bridging.
Other apps in the lineup include Galactica for private AI inference, Nemi for private perpetuals trading, Nulo, a private browser wallet, and Rolling Chat, a private message board based on experiments that Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin ran on Aztec.
Privacy push across Ethereum
The launch comes during a renewed focus on privacy for Ethereum. According to the source, Buterin has laid out plans for a “cryptographic world computer” and has pushed to lower the cost of quantum-safe privacy. Separately, another team has spun out a for-profit firm to encourage institutional adoption of privacy tools.
Aztec previously raised $17 million in a funding round to build out its network. The project is betting that privacy becomes a default feature of Ethereum rather than an add-on. The upgrade also reflects a wider trend in crypto of hardening code, as AI tools make it easier to find vulnerabilities.
