Binance skips Luna Classic monthly token burn for first time since 2023 amid record hack

What the Binance burn delay means

Binance has not carried out its planned November burn of Luna Classic (LUNC) tokens, the first time it has missed the monthly schedule since March 2023. The exchange normally burns a share of its trading fees from the token at the start of each month.

Community members say the delay is likely tied to the $6.3 billion hack of Binance, which the FBI attributes to North Korea's hacker group TraderTraitor. The exchange has been reopening withdrawals in stages as it works to recover.

What we know about the burn

  • Binance has burned a share of its Luna Classic trading fees nearly every month since March 2023, but no November burn has appeared yet, according to data from StatsBin.

  • The burns started after the Terra Classic community voted in late 2022 to burn part of every on-chain LUNC transaction, with Binance pledging to burn half of the fees it earns on the token.

  • Luna Classic is the original native token of the Terra blockchain. Terraform Labs founder Do Kwon left the project in 2022 and was later convicted of fraud and sentenced to 15 years in prison over the $40 billion collapse.

  • Binance paused burns once before, withholding contributions at the end of 2022 after the community voted to re-mint some burned tokens as a development fund. It resumed in March 2023 after that vote was scrapped.

What community members and sources say

Some investors worry about the missing burn, while others point to the hack as a likely explanation. Dawid Skinder, a contributor for the Terra Classic ecosystem, said the monthly burn is an important sign of support and a vital part of the campaign. He added that it may simply be an operational issue after the hack and that Terra Classic does not need another problem.

Pedro, a Luna Classic community member known online as Vegas, said the hack was a problem and that he is helping to keep LUNC and LUNA safe. He has long claimed to be in direct contact with Binance about LUNC issues, though that claim has not been independently verified. Vegas says Binance is doing security maintenance and moving LUNC to a more secure wallet before resuming the burn. Binance did not respond to Decrypt's request for comment.

How the token is performing

Luna Classic has dropped 7.9% over the past week to $0.0000417, per Decrypt data, and is down 99.99% from its all-time high of $119.18. Investors say the paused burn is just one of many challenges facing the token.

Skinder said Terra Classic needs more useful products, better marketing, a proper audit, and stronger protection against quantum computing attacks. He also called decentralized governance and "amateur validators" obstacles to a revival. Still, he said the project has a strong story and more than 20 stablecoins waiting to be re-pegged.

Why this matters

The monthly burn is a key part of the token's deflationary plan, which aims to reduce the supply of LUNC over time. A paused burn removes one of the main sources of supply reduction for now. For holders, it also raises the question of whether Binance still sees the token as a priority while recovering from the largest crypto hack in history.

What is still unclear

It is not confirmed why the November burn was missed. Binance has not given a reason, and the claim that it is moving LUNC to a more secure wallet before resuming comes only from an unverified community member.
