Bitcoin and XRP show signs of a 'Bart Simpson' price pattern as analysts debate its validity
Bitcoin and XRP charts resemble the 'Bart Simpson' pattern
Bitcoin and XRP prices have recently formed a chart pattern resembling the head of Bart Simpson, the cartoon character from The Simpsons. This so-called 'Bart Simpson' pattern, first identified in 2015, describes a price movement where a sharp rise is followed by sideways trading and then a steep drop, creating a shape like Bart’s spiky hair.
Bitcoin rose from about $64,420 on August 19 to nearly $80,700 by August 25 before pulling back to around $76,500. XRP showed a similar movement, climbing from $1 to $1.52 between August 19 and August 22 before easing to around $1.32.
What the pattern means and why analysts disagree
The 'Bart Simpson' pattern is said to have three phases: a sharp price spike, a period of sideways trading (the 'head'), and a sharp reversal. Traders are now debating whether this pattern will fully form for Bitcoin and XRP.
Mati Greenspan, founder of Quantum Economics, said the pattern would only be confirmed if Bitcoin falls by at least 20%. He added that such patterns were more common in Bitcoin’s earlier, less liquid markets and have since become rare. For XRP, however, he noted that the sharp rally from $1 to $1.70 makes the pattern more plausible.
Frank Hepworth, CEO of New Market Trading, warned that Bitcoin’s failure to break past its 50-week moving average near $81,000 could signal a pullback to $70,000 or even $58,000 if selling increases. For XRP, he suggested it could drop to between $0.55 and $1.21 if Bitcoin falls to $70,000, or as low as $0.46 if Bitcoin reaches $58,000.
Key observations
- Bitcoin rose from $64,420 (Aug. 19) to nearly $80,700 (Aug. 25) before retreating to around $76,500.
- XRP climbed from $1 to $1.52 (Aug. 22) and later traded near $1.32.
- Analysts disagree on whether the pattern will complete, with some requiring a 20% drop for confirmation.
- Bitcoin’s resistance at $81,000 is seen as a critical level by some traders.
Why this pattern matters
The 'Bart Simpson' pattern is watched by traders because it signals a potential sharp reversal after a strong price move. If confirmed, it could indicate a significant pullback for Bitcoin and XRP, though analysts remain divided on whether this will happen.
