Bitcoin ETF Inflows Hit One-Month High as Weak Stocks Threaten $80,000 Support

Bitcoin ETFs post their biggest day in a month

U.S. spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) — funds that track bitcoin's price and trade on stock exchanges — took in roughly $527 million in net flows on Monday, their largest single day of inflows in a month, CoinDesk reported.

Almost all of that money went to one fund. BlackRock's IBIT attracted $665.2 million, its biggest inflow in more than a year, while funds from Fidelity and Grayscale recorded withdrawals.

The inflows came as bitcoin traded above the $80,000 level. Over the previous 24 hours, bitcoin fell about 1.1%, ether dropped 1.7% and the CoinDesk 20 Index, which tracks a basket of major cryptocurrencies, lost roughly 1.6%. CoinDesk attributed the decline to lower Asian stocks and higher oil prices.

Key numbers from Monday

  • About $527 million: net inflows into U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs, the most in a month
  • $665.2 million: inflows into BlackRock's IBIT
  • $103.3 million: outflows from ether ETFs, a fourth straight day of withdrawals
  • Around 5.13%: the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield
  • Near $110 a barrel: the price of Brent crude

What QCP Capital expects

Analysts at QCP Capital said in a note published Monday that further weakness in stock markets could reduce demand, according to CoinDesk. Nasdaq 100 futures and S&P 500 futures were both lower, and stocks including Coinbase Global and Galaxy Digital fell in pre-market trading.

The analysts wrote that "broader equity deleveraging dynamics could transmit to cryptocurrency markets and potentially threaten the $80,000 support level if sustained." That is a claim about a possible outcome, not a confirmed event.

QCP also noted that the ether ETF outflows point to demand focused on bitcoin rather than the wider crypto market. On the other side, the analysts said a continued Treasury rally could support risk assets, especially if real yields fall and the dollar weakens.

What is confirmed

The ETF flow figures, the BlackRock inflow amount, the ether ETF outflows, the price moves in bitcoin, ether and the CoinDesk 20 Index, the futures declines and the pre-market stock moves are all reported by CoinDesk as market data.

What is still unclear

Whether stock market weakness will continue and whether it would actually push crypto prices down to the $80,000 level is not known. That outcome is the analysts' assessment, not a confirmed result. CoinDesk also reports the macro picture carries risks: the 10-year Treasury yield is around 5.13% and Brent crude is near $110 a barrel, which keeps energy-driven inflation a concern if the geopolitical situation does not improve.

What happens next

The Federal Reserve is widely expected to keep interest rates unchanged next week, CoinDesk reported. Prediction markets are pricing in a 25 basis-point increase next month. A basis point is one hundredth of a percentage point.
