Bitcoin ETFs follow price moves, not set them, DWF Labs says

ETF flows react to Bitcoin price swings

US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs — funds traded on a stock exchange that track the price of Bitcoin) do not appear to predict price moves. According to a research report from DWF Labs, investors have tended to buy into rallies and sell into drops.

The report reviewed 694 trading days since spot Bitcoin ETFs launched in the US in January 2024.

Rallies drew inflows, most drops drew outflows

  • All nine rallies of at least 15% drew net inflows.
  • In seven of the eight sell-offs of at least 15%, investors pulled money out with net outflows.

Little link to future price moves

DWF Labs found a moderate link between ETF flows and Bitcoin's price changes over the five trading sessions before, with a correlation of 0.54. For the next five trading sessions, that correlation was 0.03, showing little sign of predictive power.

Large outflows and a possible hedging factor

The heaviest withdrawals came from two recent sell-offs: $6.9 billion between October 2025 and February 2026, and $8.2 billion during the May–June decline. DWF Labs estimated that roughly a fifth of flows may have been hedged (buying ETF shares while betting against Bitcoin through CME futures), but could not confirm that the same investors held both sides. The report did not split the flows between institutions and retail investors.

Different investor shifts reported by another source

A separate CoinShares analysis published in June found that professional investors reduced their Bitcoin ETF exposure by 17% in the first quarter of 2026. Hedge funds and brokerages accounted for about 96% of that reduction, while banks increased their holdings.

Sell-offs less frequent but still large

Since the ETFs launched, sell-offs of 15% or more have happened about three times per year. That is down from roughly four times per year in 2022–2023 and eight times per year in 2021. The median sell-off wiped out 21.3%, compared with 19.4% in 2022–2023. DWF Labs noted that volatility and the frequency of sell-offs were already declining before the funds launched.
