Bitcoin's on a streak it hasn't hit since 2012

Bitcoin heads for a rare three-month winning streak

Bitcoin has gained in July, August, and is on track to finish September higher, which would mark the first three-month winning streak since 2012. The cryptocurrency has risen 4.8% in July, 25.2% in August, and about 10.9% in September so far, trading near $86,140.

Key numbers

  • July gain: 4.8%
  • August gain: 25.2%
  • September gain so far: 10.9%
  • Current price: around $86,140
  • 2012 comparison: July +41.0%, August +6.4%, September +24.4%

What happened in 2012

The only other time bitcoin posted gains across all three months was in 2012. That streak was broken in October, when bitcoin fell 9.7%. But the decline bottomed out at $10.17 on Oct. 26, and from that low, bitcoin launched a 165-day rally that carried it to $230 by April 2013 — a gain of more than 2,000%.

Is history likely to repeat itself?

Analysts caution that the 2012 sample is too small to draw firm conclusions. Bitcoin has been trading since at least late 2010, and this pattern has appeared only once since then. Some cycle models suggest a potentially bullish phase could begin around October or November, but historical cycles are approximate, not fixed rules.

There are also important differences between then and now. In 2012, bitcoin was a thinly traded asset worth barely $10, and its market could be moved by relatively few buyers. Today, bitcoin is part of a multi-trillion-dollar market with substantial institutional participation, deep liquidity across dozens of exchanges, and a wide range of trading strategies including options, futures, and basis trades. Those conditions make a rally of similar percentage magnitude much harder to achieve today.

What is confirmed

Bitcoin has gained in July, August, and September of 2026. The only prior three-month winning streak occurred in 2012. After that streak, bitcoin fell in October 2012 before launching a historic rally. Current market conditions are vastly different from 2012 in terms of scale and institutional involvement.

What is still unclear

Whether bitcoin will follow a similar path of an October dip followed by a major rally cannot be determined from the 2012 precedent alone. The sample size of one is too small to make meaningful predictions about future price movements.

Why this matters

The rarity of a three-month winning streak highlights bitcoin's current momentum. While the 2012 comparison is intriguing, the vastly different market structure today means any future rally may look quite different from what happened over a decade ago.
