BitFuFu's Bitcoin Output Surges 55% in August as Canaan's Production Slides

August mining output rebounds for some public bitcoin miners

Public bitcoin mining companies BitFuFu and CleanSpark saw their production rise in August, while Canaan's output continued to decline. BitFuFu's bitcoin production jumped by more than 55% from July, driven by a major expansion in its mining capacity. CleanSpark's production edged up slightly, and Canaan mined fewer bitcoins for the third consecutive month.

Production figures and key operational changes

  • BitFuFu produced 174 BTC in August, up from 112 BTC in July.
  • CleanSpark produced 593 BTC in August, a roughly 1% increase from 586 BTC in July.
  • Canaan mined 44 BTC in August, down from 46 BTC in July.
  • BitFuFu's managed hashrate, a measure of computing power for mining, increased by 45% to 20.6 EH/s.
  • Canaan sold its entire Ethereum (ETH) holdings and 54 BTC, using part of the proceeds to repurchase company shares.

BitFuFu's capacity expansion drives rebound

BitFuFu's production increase was fueled by a 45.1% month-over-month jump in its total managed hashrate to 20.6 EH/s. This growth came from mining capacity secured earlier in the year coming online. The company's cloud mining segment, which mines bitcoin on behalf of customers, saw output more than double to 86 BTC. Its self-mining production also rose to 88 BTC. BitFuFu ended August with 1,373 BTC in its treasury, up from 1,314 BTC at the start of the month.

CleanSpark maintains steady output amid slight hashrate dip

CleanSpark reported a modest production increase to 593 BTC despite its average operating hashrate slipping slightly to 38.3 EH/s. The company has produced 4,903 BTC so far in 2026. Its bitcoin holdings decreased to 13,703 BTC from 13,931 BTC at the end of July. This reduction followed the sale of 77 BTC on the spot market, the exercise of options for 500 BTC, and 244 BTC linked to a basis trade. CleanSpark noted ongoing construction at its Sandersville data center and received conditional classifications for 885 MW of contracted power capacity in Texas.

Canaan sells Ethereum and BTC to fund share repurchases

Canaan's bitcoin production fell to 44 BTC, continuing a downward trend from 64 BTC in June. The company made significant changes to its crypto treasury: it sold all 3,952 ETH and 54 BTC it held, generating about $13.9 million in cash. It then used $5.4 million to repurchase 13.6 million of its American Depositary Shares. After these transactions, Canaan ended August holding 1,868 BTC and no ETH.

Mixed stock performance reflects varied results

Shares of the mining companies showed mixed reactions on the market. Canaan's stock rose 2.4% to $0.34, but it remains down more than 55% for the year. BitFuFu's shares were flat at $1.29, down about 54% year-to-date. CleanSpark's stock fell 2.3% to $13.36, though it is still up nearly 16% for the year.

Why these changes matter for mining operations and treasuries

The production figures indicate how efficiently these companies are mining bitcoin and managing their resources. BitFuFu's sharp increase highlights successful capacity growth, which can lead to higher revenue. Canaan's treasury shakeup, selling ETH and BTC to repurchase shares, shows a shift in financial strategy. These moves affect the companies' bitcoin holdings, which are important metrics for investors tracking mining company performance.

What happens next for CleanSpark and others

CleanSpark mentioned that construction is underway at its Sandersville data center campus, linked to a previously announced $6.6 billion lease. This project represents a significant expansion of its mining infrastructure.
