British Investor Recovers $4.5 Million in Bitcoin Lost Since 2012

British investor recovers millions from early Bitcoin investment

A British man, identified by the pseudonym Chris, has recovered Bitcoin now worth approximately $4.5 million. He originally invested around $2,000 in December 2011 through Britcoin, an exchange that later became Intersango. An exchange is a platform where people can buy and sell digital currencies.

Chris lost access to his funds after Intersango stopped trading in late 2012 and eventually went offline in early 2014. He believed the money was lost forever while he watched the price of Bitcoin rise over the next decade. At the time of his original purchase, Bitcoin was trading for less than $4 per coin.

Key numbers in the Bitcoin recovery

  • Original investment: Approximately £1,500 ($2,000).
  • Current recovered value: $4.5 million.
  • Total Bitcoin identified in the linked wallet: Over 5,500 BTC, worth about $421 million.
  • Purchase price: Under $4 per Bitcoin in 2011.

How the lost cryptocurrency was identified

The law firm CEL Solicitors used tracing software to find a digital wallet linked to former Intersango users. A wallet is a digital tool used to store and manage cryptocurrency. The firm worked with its sister company, The Crypto Tracing Experts, to locate the funds.

According to the law firm, the identified wallet contained more than 5,500 BTC. The recovery turned Chris's early investment into a significant fortune that he plans to use for his family. He stated he intends to pay off his son's home loans and purchase a larger house for himself.

Possible recovery for other exchange users

This case may provide a path for other people who lost money when Intersango shut down. Ryan Sweetnam, a director at CEL Solicitors, said that recovering these assets requires specific proof of ownership. This includes bank documents dating back nearly 15 years that show the original Bitcoin purchase.

Former users who can establish clear ownership may be able to reclaim their funds. However, the process relies on having detailed records from the time of the investment.

Chris's plans for the future

Chris said he plans to keep some of his Bitcoin holdings to see if the value increases further. However, he also expressed concern regarding the lack of regulation in the crypto market and the risks of price volatility. He noted that while some investments are more regulated now, cryptocurrency remains a nervous prospect for him due to potential price drops or theft.
