Cango Shares Drop 20% Following $81.6 Million Second-Quarter Loss
Cango Shares Fall Over 20% After Quarterly Financial Results
Cango Inc. saw its stock price drop by more than 21% on Tuesday following the release of its second-quarter financial results. The company, which is listed on the New York Stock Exchange, reported a net loss of $81.6 million for the period ending June 30.
The bitcoin miner recorded $50.8 million in total revenue, a decrease of approximately 50% from the first quarter of the year. Bitcoin mining accounted for $47.4 million of the total revenue. Bitcoin mining is the process of using powerful computers to secure the network and earn new coins as a reward.
Important Financial and Operational Figures
- The company produced 656 bitcoin (BTC) during the second quarter.
- Cango held 1,065 BTC in its reserves at the end of the quarter, valued at roughly $82.8 million.
- The average cash cost to mine one bitcoin fell by 5% from the first quarter to $73,313.
- Total operating hashrate—a measure of computational power—stood at 27.58 EH/s.
Details From Cango’s Performance Report
The company attributed its lower revenue to a strategy of "right-sizing" its mining operations. This involved phasing out older S19 mining machines and moving some capacity to a hosted leasing model. Of its total hashrate, 19.94 EH/s came from its own machines, while 7.74 EH/s was from leased capacity.
Cango has also started hedging its bitcoin holdings. Hedging is a financial strategy used to protect against the risk of price changes in an asset. This move is intended to provide a buffer against the high volatility often seen in the crypto markets.
Shift Toward Efficiency and AI Infrastructure
CEO Paul Yu stated that the company is now focusing on the profitability of individual units rather than simply increasing the scale of its mining business. As part of this new direction, Cango is diversifying into artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure.
The company is currently converting its mining site in Georgia to support GPU computing. This type of hardware is essential for processing AI tasks. Cango expects to begin generating revenue from this site during the third quarter.
Future Expectations for Cango
Investors are closely watching Cango's transition as it balances its traditional mining business with new AI ambitions. The company's stock was trading around $1.89 on Tuesday morning following the news. The Georgia site, which supports up to 3 MW of power, represents the first major step in the company's move toward supporting high-performance computing.
