Chelsea FC signs Circle as stablecoin sponsor after UK warning
Circle stabilizes on Chelsea kits ahead of season
Circle, the company behind the USDC digital currency, will have its name displayed on the front of Chelsea Football Club jerseys during the 2026/2027 season. The announcement was made on Friday.
This sponsorship deal comes just months after the UK's financial watchdog, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), warned football clubs about partner companies that are not authorized to offer financial services. The regulator sent warning letters to several Premier League clubs, suggesting Chelsea might also be included in that list.
Regulators concerned about fan loyalty
The FCA expressed concern that unauthorized crypto businesses are using sponsorship deals to reach football fans. Lucy Castledine, the FCA's director of consumer investments, stated that millions of fans trust their club's badge and should not let unregulated firms exploit that loyalty by promoting potentially risky products.
Circle noted that while USDC is issued by certain regulated affiliates, it is not issued or regulated under United Kingdom laws. However, Circle UK Trading Limited has been listed as an authorized company under the FCA since 2018 for providing certain financial services.
What this means for the club
Stablecoins like USDC are digital assets designed to maintain a steady value, unlike other cryptocurrencies that can fluctuate wildly. While these assets are legal to use in the UK, lawmakers are still working to create a full regulatory framework for the digital asset industry. Cointelegraph reached out to both Circle and the FCA for further comment but did not receive an immediate response.
Context of recent warnings
The FCA letters specifically targeted unauthorized companies, including crypto businesses, that may be breaching UK financial services laws through their sponsorship agreements with clubs. This situation highlights the growing tension between the sports world's need for sponsorship revenue and the regulatory push to protect consumers from unvetted financial products.
Upcoming season details
Chelsea fans will now see the Circle branding prominently displayed on player jerseys throughout the upcoming football season. The partnership marks a significant move for the stablecoin issuer into the sports sponsorship arena, despite the cautious stance taken by UK regulators regarding such deals.
