Coinbase and Better Mortgage launch crypto-backed mortgages for Coinbase One members
Crypto-backed mortgages now available to Coinbase One members
Coinbase and Better Mortgage have made their token-backed mortgage product generally available to Coinbase One members. This program allows eligible borrowers to use cryptocurrency as collateral for a home loan instead of selling their crypto assets.
The product was first announced in March and officially launched for Coinbase One members on August 12, 2026. It follows standard mortgage guidelines set by Fannie Mae.
How the program works
- Coinbase One members approved for Better Mortgage products can receive a lender credit equal to 1% of the mortgage value, up to $10,000.
- The credit can be used for closing costs on standard mortgages, home equity lines of credit, and refinances.
- Bitcoin and USDC (a type of cryptocurrency pegged to the US dollar) are supported as collateral for the down payment.
- Borrowers pledge crypto assets without selling them, allowing them to keep their investments while buying a home.
Early interest and eligibility
Better Mortgage reported that 41% of its pre-approved customers qualify based on income and credit but lack enough cash for a traditional down payment. The companies opened a waitlist in June, which attracted over $260 million in projected loan volume before the general launch.
Of the waitlist respondents, 76% were already Coinbase One users, and 60% planned to buy a home within six months.
What the companies say
Ziggy Jonsson, Chief Technology Officer at Better Mortgage, stated: "By allowing Coinbase One members to pledge crypto as collateral without selling their holdings, we're opening a new path toward homeownership for a generation of borrowers whose wealth increasingly lives onchain."
What is confirmed
- The token-backed mortgage product is now generally available to Coinbase One members as of August 12, 2026.
- Better Mortgage has funded over $110 billion in loans to date.
- The lender credit of 1% of the mortgage value, capped at $10,000, applies to eligible products.
- Bitcoin and USDC are supported as collateral for the down payment.
- 41% of Better Mortgage’s pre-approved customers lack sufficient cash for a traditional down payment.
Why this matters for homebuyers
This program could help people who own cryptocurrency but don’t have enough cash for a traditional down payment. By using crypto as collateral, borrowers may qualify for a mortgage without liquidating their digital assets, which could be useful if they expect their crypto holdings to increase in value over time.
