Coinbase Earnings Preview: Wall Street Divided on Crypto Trading Rebound After Robinhood's 55% Revenue Drop
Coinbase Faces Earnings Test Amid Uncertain Trading Recovery
Coinbase Global, a major crypto exchange platform where users buy and sell digital currencies, is set to report its third-quarter earnings after the stock market closes on Thursday. Wall Street analysts expect trading activity improved from the second quarter, but they disagree sharply on how much revenue the rebound will generate.
Trading activity picked up in September after hitting multiyear lows in June, driven by a recovery in crypto prices. The uncertainty follows a weak report from rival platform Robinhood, which reported a 55% drop in crypto transaction revenue from a year earlier.
Coinbase still earns a large share of its revenue from customer trading fees. Unlike traditional stockbrokers with multiple income streams, the company remains highly sensitive to swings in crypto prices because trading volumes tend to fall when prices drop.
Key Details From Analyst Reports
- Robinhood's crypto trading volume fell 38% in the third quarter, while its crypto transaction revenue dropped 55% year-over-year
- Total revenue forecasts for Coinbase range from roughly $1.2 billion to $1.4 billion
- Transaction revenue estimates span from $578 million to $694 million
- Coinbase's stablecoin income and derivatives business could help offset weak trading results
Wall Street Forecasts Vary Widely
Analysts at three major firms issued notably different predictions for Coinbase's third-quarter performance.
JPMorgan, which rates Coinbase as overweight, is the most optimistic on trading volume with a forecast of $173 billion for the quarter. The firm expects $694 million in transaction revenue and $323 million in adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) — a common measure of operating profitability.
Barclays, which has an underweight rating on the stock, predicts $147 billion in trading volume and $360 million in adjusted EBITDA.
Oppenheimer, which rates the company as outperform, forecasts $141 billion in trading volume, $578 million in transaction revenue, and $262 million in adjusted EBITDA.
The analysts agree that Coinbase remains heavily exposed to changes in crypto trading activity. Barclays noted that September's pickup in spot trading volumes appeared to lose steam in early October. Oppenheimer cut its trading volume forecast by 20% due to weaker market activity.
Stablecoin Revenue Could Provide Cushion
Coinbase's stablecoin business may help soften the impact of sluggish trading. Stablecoins are digital currencies whose value is tied to an outside asset like the U.S. dollar, making them less volatile than other cryptocurrencies.
Coinbase earns a share of the income generated from reserves backing USDC, a dollar-backed stablecoin issued by Circle Internet. JPMorgan expects Coinbase to bring in $320 million in stablecoin revenue for the quarter — a source of income that doesn't depend on customers placing trades.
What Remains Unclear
The main question hanging over Coinbase's earnings is whether the September trading rebound was strong enough or lasted long enough to meaningfully boost revenue. The apparent slowdown in early October has raised doubts about whether any recovery will continue into the fourth quarter.
Analysts also disagree on the longer-term outlook for Coinbase's business beyond the third quarter.
