Coinbase Launches Regulated Crypto Futures Trading in Canada

Coinbase brings crypto derivatives to Canada

Coinbase has launched crypto derivatives trading in Canada, providing eligible users with access to perpetual and dated futures. Futures are financial contracts where two parties agree to trade an asset, such as Bitcoin, at a specific price on a future date. These products cover assets like Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), and Solana (SOL).

The service is offered through Coinbase Financial Markets. This entity is a registered futures commission merchant in the United States and operates in Canada under specific regulatory exemptions for foreign dealers.

Key features of the new trading products

  • Traders can access 23 different crypto perpetual and dated futures.
  • The offering includes five commodity futures and the Coinbase 50 Index.
  • Eligible users can use leverage of up to 10x. Leverage is a tool that allows a trader to control a larger position with a smaller amount of money.
  • The contracts utilize nano-sized positions for trading.

Official details from Coinbase Financial Markets

According to the company, Coinbase is the first major crypto-native platform to offer direct native crypto futures within Canada. The announcement states that these products are designed for specific eligible customers, such as those with at least $5 million in net financial assets. Registered investment advisers and dealers are also eligible to use the service.

Expanding US platforms in the Canadian market

The move by Coinbase follows other US-based trading platforms growing their presence in the country. Webull recently expanded its crypto trading to Canadian customers by using infrastructure from Coinbase for both trading and custody. Custody refers to the secure storage of digital assets.

Additionally, Robinhood entered the Canadian market in June. This was achieved through a $180 million acquisition of the local crypto firm WonderFi, which included the exchanges Bitbuy and Coinsquare.

Confirmed requirements and regulations

Access to these new futures products is strictly limited to eligible Canadian investors. This includes individuals or entities with significant financial assets or professional registration. The expansion occurs as Canadian officials look closer at other areas of the industry. Proposals have been made to ban crypto ATMs due to concerns over scams, and lawmakers are considering a ban on cryptocurrency donations to political parties.

Why this move matters for Canadian crypto access

Research from the Ontario Securities Commission shows that crypto ownership in Canada rose to 25% this year, up from 10% in 2023. As more people own digital assets, major platforms are competing to provide regulated tools for advanced trading. While the government is tightening rules on ATMs and political donations, it is also allowing regulated derivatives for institutional and high-net-worth investors.
