Coinbase Receives CFTC Approval for US Derivatives Clearinghouse
Coinbase secures regulatory green light
Coinbase has received approval from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to launch Coinbase Clearing LLC. This entity will serve as a US-based derivatives clearing organization. The registration became effective on Monday.
This move allows Coinbase to join Kraken in managing its own US derivatives infrastructure. A derivatives clearing organization acts as an intermediary between buyers and sellers in a trade. It helps manage settlement and counterparty risk, including scenarios where one party defaults.
Scope of new clearing operations
- The clearinghouse can clear fully collateralized futures, options on futures, and swaps.
- The current registration does not permit the clearinghouse to clear leveraged products.
- The approval enables the use of native USDC collateral and 24/7 settlement for eligible products.
- This addition complements Coinbase's existing futures broker, Coinbase Financial Markets Inc., and its exchange, Coinbase Derivatives LLC.
Statement from Coinbase leadership
Molly Abraham, general counsel at Coinbase, stated that the approval completes the company's end-to-end derivatives infrastructure. She noted that this allows them to bring more regulated derivatives products to the market. This development marks a step in Coinbase's expansion from a crypto trading platform into a provider of financial market infrastructure.
Industry trend toward internal infrastructure
Other crypto companies are also moving to bring US derivatives infrastructure in-house. For example, Payward, the parent company of Kraken, completed its acquisition of Bitnomial in May. That deal gave Kraken access to a CFTC-regulated exchange, clearinghouse, and futures brokerage.
Current product offerings
Through its derivatives exchange, Coinbase lists US-regulated futures tied to cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ether. The platform also offers commodity and equity-index futures, as well as long-dated perpetual-style crypto futures.
