Coinbase says customer data exposed through analytics vendor, denies its own systems were breached

Coinbase attributes data exposure to vendor Amplitude

Coinbase said a security incident at its analytics vendor, Amplitude, exposed contact information for some of its customers. The exchange made clear on Wednesday that its own systems were not breached and that customer funds were not affected.

Coinbase described the affected group as a small subset of its customers, and noted the incident also involved other Amplitude clients. The announcement came alongside Wednesday reports of separate cybersecurity issues at crypto exchanges and traditional financial firms.

What Coinbase said

  • A security incident at analytics vendor Amplitude exposed some customers' contact information.

  • Only a small subset of Coinbase customers was affected, along with clients of other companies that use Amplitude.

  • Coinbase found no evidence of unauthorized access to its own systems.

  • Customer funds were not affected.

How many customers were affected

Coinbase did not say exactly how many customers were affected. Cointelegraph asked the exchange for that number but had not received a response by the time the article was published.

What is known and what remains unclear

What is confirmed from Coinbase is that contact information for a small subset of customers was exposed in an incident at vendor Amplitude, and that Coinbase denies its own systems were breached. What remains unclear is the exact number of affected customers and the details of how the exposure happened.

Related incidents this week

The disclosure follows other reports from Wednesday. In South Korea, exchange Bithumb is investigating whether a breach of its internal work platform exposed customer information. Brokerage Daishin Securities said personal and credit information belonging to 38,490 customers was leaked.

History of data issues at Coinbase

This is not the first time Coinbase has faced a data problem. In May 2025, the exchange disclosed a separate data breach that affected less than 1% of its monthly transacting users. At that time, Coinbase estimated reimbursement and remediation costs at up to $400 million.

An exchange is a company that lets users buy and sell digital assets. Analytics software collects and reports on how people use a product or website.
