Core DAO to perform emergency hard fork after validators took extra rewards
Core DAO is planning an emergency hard fork of its blockchain after a small group of validators collected more CORE rewards than the network was designed to issue.
A hard fork is a major upgrade to a blockchain that changes its rules. Core DAO said the issue has been contained and that the upgrade will move the network forward without reversing past transactions.
What Core DAO has confirmed
In a status update, Core DAO stated that a small number of validators had taken rewards well above the intended amount. The problem was limited to reward distribution, and user funds were not at risk. The team said it would release a technical report explaining what happened.
The hard fork will be a forward upgrade, meaning it will not roll back the network or undo any confirmed transactions.
Exchange responses
Several exchanges temporarily restricted CORE token transfers during the incident. Coinbase paused sends and receives on the Core network. Bithumb and Coinone suspended deposits and withdrawals, citing security concerns. Bitget also suspended CORE deposits and withdrawals, mentioning wallet maintenance, while LBank paused deposits at the project’s request.
Unanswered questions
Core DAO has not yet disclosed how much extra CORE was issued, how long the issue lasted, or whether any of the extra tokens entered circulation. The exact vulnerability that allowed the validators to take extra rewards also remains unexplained.
