Crypto PACs Spend $170 Million With Strong Support for Republican Candidates

Crypto industry groups spend millions on midterm races

Three of the largest political action committees (PACs) in the cryptocurrency industry have spent approximately $170 million on the U.S. midterm congressional elections. A PAC is an organization that pools money to influence elections or legislation. This spending has largely supported Republican candidates or opposed Democrats, despite polling that suggests Democrats have a high chance of gaining more power in Congress.

Fairshake has emerged as the most active group, contributing the bulk of the industry's financial support. These funds are used for various campaign activities, including television advertising, direct mail, and political text messages to reach voters.

Breakdown of political spending numbers

  • Fairshake and its affiliated groups spent $154 million on favored candidates during this election cycle.
  • The Digital Freedom Fund committed over $8 million in October to oppose Democratic challengers in Senate races.
  • The Fellowship Fund spent a total of $4.4 million, with the majority going to Republican candidates earlier in the year.
  • Fairshake maintains a reserve of $56 million to use in future election cycles.

Fairshake leads the industry's political push

Fairshake is currently one of the most prominent corporate campaign operations in the United States. A spokesman for the group stated that it remains an issue-focused organization that supports candidates from both parties who favor American innovation in the digital asset space. While it has backed candidates from both sides, its largest expenditures have favored Republicans or targeted Democrats in key races.

Contributions from the Digital Freedom Fund and Fellowship Fund

The Digital Freedom Fund is primarily backed by Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss. This month, the fund spent more than $8 million to block Democratic Senate candidates in Ohio, Texas, and Iowa. This PAC is the only one among the top three to focus exclusively on supporting the Republican party.

The Fellowship Fund received funding from Cantor Fitzgerald and has close ties to Tether, a leader in stablecoins. A stablecoin is a digital currency designed to maintain a steady value, usually tied to the U.S. dollar. The Fellowship Fund gave $3.8 million to Republicans, including Texas Senate candidate Ken Paxton. However, it also endorsed three Democratic incumbents with $600,000 in total support. Half of that Democratic funding went to Representative Ritchie Torres of New York, a vocal supporter of the crypto industry.

Building a pro-crypto caucus in Washington

The high level of spending positions the cryptocurrency industry as a major player in U.S. congressional contests. According to Fairshake, the goal of this financial support is to build a large "pro-crypto caucus" in the American government. By backing candidates who support digital asset innovation, the industry aims to influence future policy and regulation regardless of which party controls Congress.
