Crypto Super PAC Fairshake Plans $30 Million Against Sherrod Brown's Senate Bid

Fairshake commits $30 million to defeat Brown in Ohio

The crypto industry's leading campaign-funding operation, Fairshake, has committed $30 million to defeating Sherrod Brown's bid to return to the U.S. Senate from Ohio. The spending is an echo of the $40 million the same political action committee devoted to defeating Brown two years ago — an effort that helped remove a U.S. Senate roadblock for the crypto sector.

A super PAC is a political action committee that can raise and spend unlimited funds to support or oppose candidates, but it must operate independently of any candidate's official campaign.

Key numbers

  • $30 million committed by Fairshake against Brown
  • Fairshake still has more than $90 million available for the general election
  • Polling of 1,000 likely Ohio voters shows Brown at 48% and Republican incumbent Jon Husted at 45%
  • Polymarket betting gives Brown a 57% likelihood of winning

What the spending signals

The $30 million commitment makes this the largest industry spend against a single candidate in the 2026 midterm elections, according to Fairshake spokesman Geoff Vetter. The previous largest outlay was roughly $40 million against Brown two years ago, which helped replace him with pro-crypto Senator Bernie Moreno.

Brown's critical view of the crypto sector had been a thorn in the side of businesses that backed Fairshake and its affiliates, mainly Coinbase, Ripple Labs, and a16z. The digital assets industry had spent years unsuccessfully trying to get U.S. market structure legislation through the Senate Banking Committee that Brown once led.

However, a potential Brown return would not necessarily mean he would reclaim his former role on the committee, since Senator Elizabeth Warren is the current top Democrat on the banking panel and is widely expected to be first in line for the gavel if Democrats retake the Senate.

Brown's campaign response

Brown's campaign sent CoinDesk a press release criticizing the Fairshake spending. Patrick Eisenhauer, the campaign manager, said: "Jon Husted's for sale and the billionaires and corporations pouring millions into this race know it."

Fairshake's broader strategy

Fairshake has been carefully bipartisan in its support and opposition of candidates, though big-ticket spending has generally gone toward supporting Republicans or opposing Democrats this year. Previously, the second-largest spending was about $12 million in an Alabama Senate primary for Barry Moore, and the third-largest was more than $10 million spent unsuccessfully trying to derail Illinois Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton's primary bid.

The industry's massive election spending through Fairshake two years ago helped support about 53 members of Congress — roughly one in 10 lawmakers in Washington — but did not yet secure the industry's top policy priority, the Clarity Act. Fairshake continues to pay for advertisements that do not mention crypto directly but are designed to help pro-crypto candidates win.

What is confirmed

Fairshake committed $30 million against Brown's Ohio campaign. The spending was first reported by the New York Times and confirmed by PAC spokesman Geoff Vetter. Fairshake still has more than $90 million available. The $40 million spent against Brown two years ago helped shift the Senate Banking Committee's direction on crypto legislation.

What is still unclear

Fairshake has not yet announced how the $30 million will be specifically deployed across media markets beyond Ohio. Vetter said more announcements would come in the coming days. It is also unclear how the spending will affect polling, which currently shows a tight race between Brown and Husted.

Why this matters

The outcome of this race could affect the balance of power in the Senate and the future of crypto legislation. A Brown win could shift the needle toward Democrats' narrow chance to regain the majority, while his continued absence has allowed the Republican-led committee to advance crypto-friendly bills. The industry sees this as a critical investment in shaping the regulatory environment for digital assets.

What happens next

Fairshake plans additional announcements about its spending strategy in the final weeks before the November 3 election day. Vetter confirmed the PAC still has more than $90 million it can devote during the general election.
