Deutsche Bank to launch crypto custody service for institutions by end of 2026

Germany's largest bank prepares a crypto custody offering

Deutsche Bank is preparing to launch a digital asset custody service for European institutional and corporate clients by the end of 2026. Custody in this context means storing and safeguarding cryptocurrencies on behalf of clients, similar to how a traditional bank holds cash and securities.

The service is subject to the completion of applicable regulatory checks, according to the bank's announcement reported by CoinDesk.

What assets will be supported at launch

  • Bitcoin (BTC)
  • Ether (ETH)
  • USDC, a stablecoin pegged to the U.S. dollar
  • EURC, a stablecoin pegged to the euro

Stablecoins are cryptocurrencies designed to hold a steady value by tying their price to a traditional currency like the dollar or euro.

What Deutsche Bank said

Gerald Podobnik, co-head of Deutsche Bank's corporate bank, said digital assets are "not a replacement for the traditional financial system but an important complement to it."

He added: "We see them as new rails that coexist with existing marketing infrastructures. The service will be developed in line with client demand, regulatory requirements and the bank's risk appetite."

How this fits with earlier plans

Deutsche Bank was reported last July to be preparing a crypto custody service alongside the European exchange Bitpanda, with a debut planned for 2026. The current announcement confirms that timeline.

Other European banks already in the space

Deutsche Bank is joining European rivals that already offer regulated cryptocurrency custody. Standard Chartered and BBVA are among the financial institutions serving institutions and corporations seeking regulated crypto storage.

What is confirmed

  • Deutsche Bank announced plans to launch a digital asset custody service.
  • The target launch window is the end of 2026.
  • The service is aimed at European institutional and corporate clients.
  • Bitcoin, ether, USDC, and EURC will be supported at debut.
  • Launch depends on the completion of regulatory checks.

What is still unclear

The exact start date within 2026 has not been announced. Specific fees, account requirements, and the full list of supported assets beyond the initial four were not detailed in the announcement.
