Ethereum's Glamsterdam upgradeis scheduled toactivate on Hoodi, a testnetwork, onOctober 26, 2026 at17:42:48UTC. The datewassetby the Ethereum Foundationin an announcement publishedon October 16,2026.

The upgradeincludesatargetof 200 million gas perblock. Gasis a measure ofthe computational work requiredto process a transactionon Ethereum. Thistestgivesnodeoperators onthe Hoodi testneta cleardeadline to updatetheir software before activation.

Mainnet timing—thedateforwhenGlamsterdam would go liveon Ethereum's mainnetwork—remains undecided. TheFoundation'sannouncement states that ETHholders and mainnetoperators have no actionto take asa result of thisHoodi scheduling.

Whatoperators need to knowbefore October26

  • All Hoodi nodeoperators must update theirexecution and consensus clientsbefore activation.
  • Validatorsmust update both theirbeacon node and validatorclient, and reviewnew duties, builder-tooling compatibility, and gas-limit settings.
  • The 200 million gas targetis a planned budgetperblock, not an instantlyenforced ceiling. Theactual block limit adjustsgradually under existing rules.
  • Mainnet activationtiming hasnot been set.

Client releases confirmedbythe Foundation

As of October17, theFoundation listedthe following releasesfor Hoodi:

  • Execution layer: Besu 26.10.0, Ethrex30.0.0-rc.2,Nethermind2.2.0
  • Consensus layer: Lodestar1.50.0,Nimbus 26.10.1, Prysmv7.3.0, Teku 26.10.1

Ethrex's listedversion is a releasecandidate, whichis a versionthat isstill being tested.Grandine, Lighthouse, Erigon,go-ethereum,and Reth havenot been listed yet. Operators ofthose clients should usereleases whose notes confirmsupportfor this Hoodiactivation.

TheBesu26.10.0 releasemigrates Bonsai code storage onfirst startup and retainsmore history when pruning. Todowngrade toan older version, operatorsmust firstrun a documented storagerevert command.

What Glamsterdam changes onthe network

Glamsterdam combines twoparts: Amsterdamonthe execution layer (whichprocessestransactions) and Gloas on the consensuslayer (which coordinateshow validatorsagree on the stateof the network).

Two keychanges are included.First, enshrined proposer-builder separation moves theexchange between block proposers and builders intothe protocol itself andgives validators more timeto check execution. Second, block-level access lists recordwhich accounts, storage, and state changesare accessed, allowing clients to performmore work in parallel.

The Foundation alsoadvises developersto test their contractsand gas estimation underthe new rules, because changed gas pricingcan affect contracts thatrely on fixed stipends, hardcoded limits, or remaining-gas assumptions.
