Fidelity Report: Solana Network Resilient After Two Years Without Outages
Solana's two-year outage-free streak draws Fidelity scrutiny
Solana has operated without a reported mainnet outage for two years, according to a new report from Fidelity's Center for Applied Technology (FCAT). The firm also flagged areas that still need closer watching.
The report says the blockchain network has made noticeable progress in resilience, economic security, and performance. But it also warns that concentrations in staking, hosting, and client software could threaten that stability going forward.
What the Fidelity report says
Economic security on Solana is bolstered by strong staking participation and incentives that reward validators — the computers that process and confirm transactions — for performing well. The network also offers low latency, expanded capacity, and cheap transactions, which support real-world use at scale.
However, the report notes that stake is concentrated among a small number of validator identities and operators. This centralization concern applies to both staking distribution and the hosting and software layers that run the network.
Solana keeps cutting block times
According to the Solana Foundation's vice president of technology, Jacob Creech, Solana reduced its slot time to 350 milliseconds in August 2026. A slot is a fixed time window during which a set of transactions can be processed and added to the blockchain. This was the first reduction since the network launched.
In June, the Solana Foundation shared plans to cut slot times further to 200 milliseconds, saying it would improve speed and accelerate transaction confirmations. Three additional 50-millisecond reductions are also planned.
Why network health matters
Mainnet outages have historically been a vulnerability for Solana, making the two-year clean streak significant. At the same time, the concentration of stake and infrastructure among fewer operators remains a risk factor that could affect the network's ability to withstand failures or attacks.
What remains unclear
The report calls for continued observation but does not provide a specific timeline for when the identified concentration risks might be resolved or what remediation steps the Solana team plans to take.
