Filecoin Six-Year Vesting Ends October 14, Cutting Annual Token Releases by 68 Million FIL

Filecoin's six-year vesting ends October 14, cutting annual releases by 68 million FIL

Filecoin's six-year genesis vesting schedule is set to complete on October 14, 2026. When it ends, roughly 68.3 million FIL will stop being released into circulation each year through these scheduled unlocks.

According to The Defiant's calculation using Filecoin's Lotus supply-accounting code and Filfox mining data, gross additions from both vesting and block rewards would drop about 77% — from roughly 88.9 million to 20.6 million FIL per year. The 20.6 million figure annualizes the latest 24 hours of production and represents a current run rate, not a forecast of future rewards.

Vesting means tokens allocated to certain parties are locked and released gradually over a set period. The end of this schedule removes a large recurring source of new supply, but it does not change how block rewards work for storage providers on the network.

Key numbers

  • Completion date: October 14, 2026
  • Annualized vesting releases ending: approximately 68.3 million FIL
  • Current annualized block rewards: approximately 20.6 million FIL (based on latest 24-hour data)
  • Total pre-completion annual additions: approximately 88.9 million FIL
  • Estimated reduction in supply growth: approximately 77%

What the token allocation includes

Filecoin's published token allocation assigns 300 million FIL to Protocol Labs — the company that built Filecoin — including its team and contributors, and 100 million to the Filecoin Foundation. Their combined six-year allocation releases about 66.7 million FIL each year.

Filecoin's Lotus supply-accounting code includes an additional 9.8 million FIL in the same six-year bucket, bringing the total scheduled annual release to about 68.3 million FIL. The Protocol Labs and Foundation streams alone make up roughly three-quarters of the pre-completion total.

Block rewards keep going after vesting ends

Filecoin's supply comes from two sources: scheduled vesting releases and rewards earned by storage providers who supply computing capacity to the network. The end of vesting does not stop block rewards. Storage providers will continue earning FIL for their work.

Block rewards have their own vesting rules. Under Filecoin's documented mechanics, 25% of earned block rewards are immediately accessible, while 75% vest over 180 days. Filecoin's documentation also describes a time-based minting component and another tied to network performance, so the remaining issuance rate is not fixed.

Already vested balances remain available to recipients after the schedule ends. The end of vesting does not force holders to sell tokens that have already been released, nor does it prevent them from selling.

How supply growth changes

Against Filfox's reported circulating supply of 919.9 million FIL, gross annualized additions would fall from about 9.7% to 2.2%. However, these figures measure vesting releases plus newly mined rewards. They do not account for net circulating-supply growth, which also reflects reserve disbursements, burns, and locked collateral. Nor do they measure exchange selling.
