Firelight launches on‑chain cover on Kraken USDC vault

Firelight announced on Oct. 15 that its on‑chain cover is now live on Kraken DeFi Earn’s Protected Strategies USDC vault. The integration adds a collateral‑backed payout mechanism for specified protocol failures.

Key numbers

  • $30.5 million of cover allocated
  • $100,000 maximum payout per depositor per coverage period
  • Premium payment about 39,859 USDT0
  • Vault order created Oct. 5 and settled Oct. 6
  • Firelight’s total value locked around $66.7 million (as of Oct. 15)

What the integration means

This is Firelight’s first partnership with a major crypto platform. The cover is automatic; users do not need to opt in. The arrangement is not insurance and is administered by Sentora, not Kraken.

How coverage works

Sentora enrolled the vault in Firelight’s program. Payouts are distributed in USDC by Sentora, while Kraken does not fund or guarantee the coverage. The $100,000 per‑address limit applies each month, and total payouts are limited by the vault’s available capital.

Firelight’s on‑chain cover uses a Cover Token that records the coverage on a blockchain and designates a payout address. A five‑member risk consortium validates losses with a three‑of‑5vote before any payout runs.

What is covered

  • Smart contract exploits
  • Oracle failures
  • Governance exploits
  • Bad debt
  • Depegs or redemption failures caused by malfunctioning protocol mechanisms

Cover only applies to recorded markets and positions during the active coverage period.

What is excluded

Normal market volatility, correct liquidations, depegs where redemption works as designed, withdrawal delays due to organically high utilization, insider theft, stolen keys, phishing and regulatory actions are not covered.

How payouts are decided

A covered position becomes unwithdrawable for more than 72 hours or a withdrawal returns less than 90 % of fair value, a trigger is activated. The risk consortium validates the loss, and payouts are sent via the cover token. Operator failure to limit losses can reduce the payout amount.

Backing the cover

Firelight backs its cover with staked FXRP (XRP represented on Flare) and a protocol‑owned stablecoin first‑loss buffer. The buffer absorbs losses before the staked collateral is drawn down. The shared capital pool supports the whole cover portfolio.

Why this matters

The addition gives users of Kraken’s USDC yield vault a potential recovery route for covered losses, rather than a guarantee of principal. It expands the suite of on‑chain risk‑management tools available to DeFi users.

What happens next

The cover is live and requires no action from existing depositors. Firelight and Sentora can adjust or end the coverage periods, and the $100,000 cap is not a promised payment.
