Crypto firms and police join forces in child exploitation crackdown
A global operation led by blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis has uncovered networks spreading child sexual abuse materials using cryptocurrency. The multi-day effort, called "Operation Lighthouse," involved crypto exchanges, law enforcement agencies, and nonprofit groups from around the world.
The operation produced over 14,000 investigative leads across 125 countries. Some suspects were already registered sex offenders. The effort focused on how criminals use digital currencies to fund and spread illegal content.

Crypto businesses that participated included Binance and Coinbase, two of the largest digital currency exchanges. Payments firm Block and nonprofit groups like the Internet Watch Foundation also contributed.
How blockchain transparency helped
Gavin Sather, a senior manager at Binance, explained that the public nature of blockchain transactions makes it harder for criminals to hide. Every transaction on a blockchain, which is the digital ledger that records crypto payments, leaves a trace that investigators can follow.
Danny van Althuis from Europol noted that criminals often use financial services, social media, and internet platforms to commit or enable these crimes. He said cooperation between these sectors is essential to stop online child sexual abuse.
