Greece sets 10% tax on cryptocurrency gains to start in 2027

New tax legislation approved

Greece has approved a 10% tax on gains from cryptocurrency starting in 2027. This decision was made by the Hellenic Parliament as part of broader legislation aimed at improving financial market regulation.

Key numbers

  • The 10% tax applies to profits from cryptocurrency sales.
  • Investors with annual net gains below 500 euros ($560) will be exempt from the tax.
  • A 15% tax will also be applied to income from staking, lending, and providing liquidity in decentralized finance (DeFi).

What the legislation entails

The new tax laws will begin on January 1, 2027. Interestingly, using cryptocurrencies for purchases may trigger capital gains tax, but swapping one crypto asset for another will not.

Opportunities for tax declaration

Investors will have a year to voluntarily declare previously unreported cryptocurrency gains, with taxes due within 60 days of filing to avoid penalties.
