HSBC Launches RedCoin Stablecoin for Retail Users in Hong Kong
HSBC introduces Hong Kong dollar stablecoin on PayMe
HSBC has launched its first stablecoin tied to the Hong Kong dollar, called RedCoin (RCHKD). A stablecoin is a type of digital currency designed to maintain a steady value by being pegged to a traditional currency.
Starting Friday, the new digital asset will be available to retail customers through the bank’s PayMe platform. Users can set up a stablecoin wallet, which is a digital tool for storing and managing digital assets, directly within the app.
How RedCoin will work for retail customers
- Users can activate a stablecoin wallet in the PayMe app over the next few days.
- The digital currency can be used for peer-to-peer transfers between individuals.
- RedCoin will be accepted by more than 100,000 merchants currently using PayMe.
- The launch follows the issuance of a stablecoin license to HSBC in April 2026.
HSBC leadership on the move to digital networks
Maggie Ng, the chief executive officer for Hong Kong at HSBC, stated that money and assets are shifting toward programmable digital networks. She noted that traditional infrastructure is moving toward always-on, data-rich systems.
John O'Neill, the bank's managing director for digital assets and currencies, said that HSBC plans to introduce more products soon. He indicated that the bank intends to expand the use of stablecoins to include corporate and institutional clients in the future.
Hong Kong’s growing role as a crypto hub
The launch of RedCoin is part of a broader effort by Hong Kong to establish itself as a center for the crypto industry. The region introduced a licensing framework for stablecoin issuers in August 2025.
HSBC and Anchorpoint Financial were the first to receive these licenses in early 2026. HSBC has also been involved in other blockchain projects, including a pilot for a digital version of the Hong Kong dollar and tokenized gold for retail investors.
What happens next for PayMe users
Users of the PayMe app should look for an option to activate their stablecoin wallets in the coming days. This will allow them to begin using RedCoin for everyday transactions and transfers. The bank also expects to roll out additional digital currency products for wholesale and institutional use as the program grows.
