Hyperliquid Outlines Development Roadmap and Token Vesting Schedule

Hyperliquid prepares for network expansion and regulatory reporting

Hyperliquid, a decentralized exchange (DEX)—a platform that allows users to trade cryptocurrencies directly without a central authority—is entering a period of structural changes. Documentation from the project and official filings reveal upcoming token unlocks for contributors and new reporting obligations under European law.

The project is also moving toward expanding its platform features through a staged rollout of its roadmap. These developments are expected to take place between 2027 and 2028, affecting both the circulating supply of the network's tokens and how the platform operates within regulated markets.

Key project milestones

  • Core-contributor token vesting is scheduled to complete during the 2027–2028 window.
  • European Union DAC8 reporting requirements for crypto assets will begin in 2027.
  • The HIP-4 improvement proposal outlines plans for new "outcome markets" to attract more activity.

Details on token unlocks and EU regulation

A May 2026 registration filing describes the allocation of 23.8% of Hyperliquid's tokens to core contributors. These tokens were subject to a one-year lock-up period. The vesting process, which makes these tokens available to the contributors, is expected to finish by the end of 2028. While this increases the transferable supply, the issuer's description does not establish that these tokens will be sold immediately.

On the regulatory side, the European Union's DAC8 framework will start its first reporting cycle in 2027. This requires crypto-asset service providers to report transaction data from the 2026 calendar year. For Hyperliquid, this could lead to changes in compliance costs and could impact how users in the EU interact with the platform.

Planned network functionality

Hyperliquid is also working on expanding its trading options through the HIP-4 proposal. This plan involves a staged rollout of additional "outcome markets." While the initial launch of the network's mainnet did not include multi-outcome markets, the project documentation suggests that these features will be added later to increase platform functionality. However, the integration and adoption of these new features may carry risks.

Significant uncertainties remain

Although the general timeline for token vesting is known, Hyperliquid has not released a specific daily schedule for these unlocks. It is also unclear exactly when the HIP-4 market expansions will go live, as the project has not provided a confirmed date. Furthermore, the full impact of EU reporting requirements on user friction and market access remains to be seen.

Why these developments matter

The completion of contributor vesting is a major step in a project’s lifecycle, as it changes the distribution of tokens among participants. Simultaneously, the introduction of new trading features through HIP-4 could determine the platform's ability to attract more trading volume. Compliance with EU regulations also highlights the growing intersection between decentralized platforms and international financial oversight.
