Interactive Brokers Launches Ethereum Staking Through Zerohash Partnership
Interactive Brokers adds crypto staking for eligible clients
Interactive Brokers has launched a cryptocurrency staking service for eligible clients, marking the brokerage's first staking offering. At launch, the service is limited to Ethereum (ETH) and is available through the broker's Client Portal.
Staking is a process where cryptocurrency holders lock up their assets to help secure a blockchain network and earn rewards in return. The infrastructure for this service is provided by zerohash, a crypto infrastructure firm. Rewards are credited as additional staked ETH and can compound over time as long as the position remains staked.
Interactive Brokers CEO Milan Galik compared the new feature to the firm's existing Stock Yield Enhancement Program, saying the goal is to help clients earn additional income on assets they already own.
Key details from the announcement
- Staking is available only for Ethereum at launch — no other cryptocurrencies are included.
- Services are provided by zerohash and accessed through the Interactive Brokers Client Portal.
- Rewards are paid in additional staked ETH, not in fiat currency.
- The feature is available to eligible clients only.
Interactive Brokers' path into crypto
The brokerage first began offering crypto trading in 2021. In January, it expanded its crypto services by introducing 24/7 account funding using USDC, a stablecoin pegged to the US dollar, to enable round-the-clock trading.
The new staking feature represents another step in the firm's gradual expansion into cryptocurrency services.
Morgan Stanley also moves on digital assets
Separately, Morgan Stanley has reportedly sought a national trust bank charter that would allow it to custody digital assets and offer staking and trading services to investment clients. This is reported information and has not been confirmed by Morgan Stanley.
