Ledger unveils Atom Android device with Solana Mobile integration and new tamper protections amid investigation into modified wallets
Ledger unveils Atom Android device with Solana Mobile integration
Ledger introduced a new Android device called Atom at its Op3n event in Paris. The Atom runs a custom version of Android alongside Ledger OS and is designed for everyday apps as well as crypto transactions. It will ship in summer 2027 and is available for pre‑order starting at $849.
The device automatically switches between a Standard Mode for daily use and a Secure Mode for reviewing and signing transactions. An FPGA chip keeps the Android environment separate from Secure Mode, and a physical switch can cut power to the camera and microphone, which are also disabled when Secure Mode is active.
Key numbers and dates
- Founder's Edition price: $849 (requires $100 refundable deposit)
- Retail price after launch: $899
- Current Ledger wallet price range: $69‑$399
- Shipping window: Summer 2027 (pending certification)
- Solana Mobile device sales: Over 200,000 units
- Solana Mobile transaction volume: More than $13 billion across 154 million transactions
- Reported suspected losses from a prior hardware implant: About $86 million (not confirmed by Ledger)
Secure mode and tamper protections
Atom includes advanced anti‑tampering features. The Secure Element, MCU, and FPGA are enclosed in a protected area that detects drilling or unauthorized opening. The device can detect attempts to remove its screen or enclosure, and tamper sensors remain active even when the device is powered off.
Ledger says the Core Protection feature will block the type of screen‑reader implant linked to the CryptoBilis incident. Atom also supports encrypted messaging using GPG/OpenPGP and incorporates post‑quantum cryptography standards developed by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology.
Solana Mobile Seeker app on Atom
Solana Mobile announced Ledger as its first hardware expansion partner. The Seeker app, which combines a wallet and a dApp Store, will be preinstalled on Atom, with transaction signing handled by Atom’s Secure Mode.
Solana Mobile has sold over 200,000 devices and generated more than $13 billion in transaction volume. The company began making its software available to other Android manufacturers in March.
Investigation into modified hardware wallets
Ledger is investigating unauthorized implants found in hardware wallets sold through a Southeast Asian reseller called CryptoBilis. The implant allegedly captured recovery phrases during device setup and transmitted them over a mobile network. On‑chain researchers have linked the incident to roughly $86 million in suspected losses, though Ledger has not confirmed the total amount.
Ledger inspected devices from retailers and distributors across Germany and found no signs of tampering. No losses related to hardware implants have been reported in Europe.
AI agent approvals and OpenClaw integration
Ledger plans to bring its Agent Intent system to Atom. Users can review transactions proposed by AI agents without sharing private keys and set policies such as allowing sub‑$100 moves without permission, requiring physical approval for larger amounts, or mandating Secure Mode approval for every action.
OpenClaw will be preloaded on Atom, enabling users to register OpenClaw agents and securely authorize actions directly on the device.
Kraken exploring Atom support
Ledger said Kraken is evaluating whether customers could use Atom’s Secure Mode to approve actions on the exchange. This builds on a previous collaboration between Payward (Kraken’s parent) and Ledger announced in September.
What is confirmed
- Device name: Atom
- Founder's Edition price: $849 with $100 refundable deposit
- Retail price: $899
- Operating system: Android Open Source Project + Ledger OS on an EAL6+ secure element
- Secure and Standard Mode separation using an FPGA chip
- Physical camera/mic power switch and automatic disable in Secure Mode
- Support for GPG/OpenPGP encrypted messaging
- Inclusion of post‑quantum cryptography compatible with NIST standards
- Integration of Solana Mobile’s Seeker app with signing in Secure Mode
- Ledger’s investigation into CryptoBilis reseller and findings in Germany
- Planned Agent Intent and OpenClaw integration
- Kraken’s exploration of Atom support
What is still unclear
- Exact total loss amount from the hardware implant (Ledger has not confirmed the reported $86 million)
- Whether any other resellers besides CryptoBilis were affected
- Ledger’s specific sales targets for Atom
Why this matters
The launch addresses recent security concerns after reports of tampered wallets by introducing new tamper‑evidence hardware and a dedicated Secure Mode that isolates transaction signing from everyday apps. The partnership with Solana Mobile expands the ecosystem for mobile crypto use, while AI agent support offers new ways to interact with assets without exposing private keys.
What happens next
Orders for Atom are open with a summer 2027 shipping estimate pending certification. Solana Mobile will make the Seeker app available on the device, and Ledger expects the hardware to reach users beyond traditional self‑custody wallets. Kraken is in discussions to incorporate Atom’s Secure Mode into its platform, and the Agent Intent system with OpenClaw will be rolled out to Atom users.
