Lighter’s LIT Token Surges 99% in 30 Days as Traders Eye US Perpetuals Opening

LIT Token Leads Perp DEX Rally on US Regulatory Expectations

Lighter's LIT token rose 13% to $4.21 and has doubled in 30 days, leading a rally in perpetual decentralized exchange (perp DEX) tokens. Traders are positioning for a U.S. regulatory opening for perpetual contracts, but neither Lighter nor the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has announced such a move.

LIT traded at $4.21 at 20:20 UTC on Thursday, up 13% over 24 hours, 13.8% over seven days, and 99.5% over 30 days. Its market value was $1.05 billion, with a fully diluted value of $4.21 billion. Bitcoin rose 5.5% over the same 24 hours to $81,492.

Key Numbers

  • LIT up 99.5% over 30 days; EDGE up 71%; HYPE up 50.8%.
  • Perp DEX volume fell 30.13% over seven days to $20.85 billion a day.
  • Robinhood order flow supplied 16.9% of Lighter's 24-hour volume.
  • Lighter's total value locked reached $655.4 million, up 24.9% from Aug. 5.

No Filing or Docket for Lighter

Lighter founder Vladimir Novakovski sits on the CFTC's Innovation Advisory Committee, but no public CFTC docket names Lighter. The exchange has not filed to register as a designated contract market.

The CFTC issued a policy statement on perpetual contracts in June and a staff letter allowing registered exchanges to drop expiration dates on perpetual-style futures. This has paved the way for U.S.-regulated bitcoin perpetual futures, but none of these moves mention Lighter.

Hyperliquid’s Named Path

Hyperliquid has a named counterparty with a license. Bloomberg reported that Hyperliquid Labs and Payward, Kraken's parent, plan to list crypto perpetual contracts on Bitnomial, a CFTC-registered exchange. No launch date or terms have been announced, and the structure would not give Hyperliquid U.S. exchange status. Lighter has announced no equivalent arrangement.

Robinhood’s Growing Share

Robinhood launched its chain's mainnet on July 1 with perpetual futures inside Robinhood Wallet powered by Lighter. The product excludes users in the U.S., U.K., Canada, Switzerland, the UAE, and Singapore.

That instance traded $240 million over 24 hours and $5.205 billion over 30 days. Robinhood supplied 16.9% of Lighter's 24-hour volume, 15.3% over seven days, and 11.6% over 30 days. Deposits on the Robinhood instance rose from $10.4 million on Jul. 20 to $57.5 million on Thursday.

Zero Fees and Token Buybacks

Lighter lists 244 perpetual markets and charges zero maker and taker fees. It collected $4.41 million in fees over 30 days, keeping $3.26 million as protocol revenue and directing $2.64 million to token holders. This gives a take rate of 0.98 basis points. Hyperliquid earned $68.91 million on $209.814 billion of volume, a take rate of 3.28 basis points.

Lighter buys back LIT with trading fee revenue through daily 24-hour TWAPs and pays stakers a fixed 6% APR with a three-day unstaking lockup.

What Is Confirmed

Confirmed numbers include LIT's price, volume, market value, and recent gains. Robinhood's share of Lighter's volume is confirmed. Lighter's fee collection and token buyback program are confirmed. Hyperliquid's plan with Payward is reported by Bloomberg but not officially confirmed by the companies.

What Is Still Unclear

It is unclear whether Lighter will seek U.S. regulatory approval. No filing or docket exists, and the exchange has not applied to register as a designated contract market. The reported plan for Hyperliquid's U.S. entry lacks a launch date and terms.

Why This Matters for Crypto Traders

These developments matter because they could lead to U.S. traders gaining access to perpetual contracts, a major derivatives product. If approved, this could open new markets for decentralized exchanges and affect their token values.

What Happens Next

No next steps are announced for Lighter. Hyperliquid's plan with Payward is reportedly in discussion, but no launch date or terms have been set.
