Mastercard launches Stablecoin Security tool to screen payments for fraud and sanctions risk

Banks get a risk score before stablecoin funds move

Mastercard announced on Monday, October 19, 2026, that it is introducing Stablecoin Security, a risk intelligence service that lets banks and other financial institutions check the risks of a stablecoin payment before money moves on a blockchain. A stablecoin is a digital token designed to hold a steady value, usually by linking to a currency such as the US dollar.

The product was unveiled at the Money20/20 USA event. Borderless.xyz and Keyrails are the first announced partners.

What the service checks

  • It traces where the money came from and flags possible links to fraud, scams, sanctions violations and other financial crime risks across the whole payment process.
  • It reviews the context of the transaction before assigning a risk score.
  • Mastercard delivers the score through an API — a connection that lets software systems exchange data — so banks can plug it into the fraud and compliance tools they already use.

"Stablecoins are creating new possibilities for value exchange, but financial institutions need the right intelligence and controls to participate with confidence," said Ann Johnson, Mastercard's executive vice president of Security Solutions, in a statement shared with The Block.

Mastercard points to a study of stablecoin transfers

Mastercard cited a Bank for International Settlements study covering 593 million stablecoin transfer events within 141 million Ethereum transactions in 2025. The study found that nearly 60% of stablecoin transfer events took place inside complex, multi-step transactions instead of simple one-to-one payments.

Part of a wider stablecoin push

The launch is the latest in a series of Mastercard stablecoin moves. In August, Mastercard and Borderless.xyz announced a Crypto Credential pilot with Infinia, Walapay and Koywe to add trust signals to cross-border stablecoin payments. Both Borderless.xyz and Keyrails have taken part in Mastercard's Start Path Blockchain and Digital Assets program.

According to Mastercard, Borderless.xyz connects financial institutions with licensed stablecoin providers in more than 113 countries and 72 currencies, while Keyrails focuses on high-value cross-border trade payments, especially in emerging markets.

Mastercard also completed its acquisition of stablecoin infrastructure provider BVNK in August, after announcing a deal worth up to $1.8 billion in March. Last week, Mastercard and BVNK launched the Global Money Platform, which combines fiat and stablecoin accounts, real-time conversion, card spending and local bank payouts through a single API. Mastercard said it expects to bring BVNK into its Stablecoin Security plans next year.

What is confirmed

Mastercard has announced Stablecoin Security, named Borderless.xyz and Keyrails as its first partners, and described how the risk scoring works. The company said the service will launch first in North America.

What happens next

Mastercard said it expects Stablecoin Security to become commercially available worldwide in 2027.
