Mercado Bitcoin Exchange Hit by $46 Million Security Breach

Mercado Bitcoin Confirms Security Incident in Brazil

Mercado Bitcoin, one of Brazil’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges—a platform where people buy and sell digital assets—confirmed a security breach on Monday. Blockchain analysts estimate that attackers stole more than $46 million from the company's wallets.

The exchange suspended deposits and withdrawals following the incident. However, security researchers observed that funds continued to move out of addresses associated with the breach for several hours after the suspension was announced.

Key Facts About the Theft

  • Analysts estimate the total loss at more than $46 million.
  • The attack targeted eight different blockchains, including Base, Optimism, and Arbitrum.
  • Stablecoin issuers Tether and Circle have already frozen about $6.2 million of the stolen assets.
  • Mercado Bitcoin stated that customer funds and personal data remain safe.

How the Security Breach Occurred

Security firm Certik reported that the attackers spent four hours targeting smaller blockchains before moving to the exchange’s main hot wallets—digital wallets connected to the internet. The breach involved transferring small amounts of Ether (ETH) from 27,160 different addresses.

Security experts noted that the theft was carried out through standard transfers rather than an exploit of a smart contract, which is a program that automatically runs on a blockchain. This suggests the attackers may have gained the ability to move money directly from customer deposit addresses.

Uncertainty Over Continued Transfers

It remains unclear why funds continued to move from the exchange even after Mercado Bitcoin announced it had paused all transactions. While a company spokesperson stated that no customer data was leaked, the exchange did not explain the ongoing transfers. The identity of the attackers is also currently unknown.

Broader Context for the Crypto Market

This incident follows a massive $6.3 billion hack of the Binance exchange just days earlier. These events highlight the risks associated with centralized trading platforms. Mercado Bitcoin, which has 4.5 million users, recently received a $20 million investment from Tether to help expand its services in Latin America.

What Happens Next

The hack is currently under investigation. If the investigation finds that customer information was accessed, Mercado Bitcoin may be required to report the event to Brazil’s data protection authority. Approximately $20 million of the stolen funds have been moved to new wallets, while another $20 million remains in addresses identified by the exchange.
