Metaplanet CEO Says Bitcoin's Moment Has Arrived for Asia
Bitcoin is getting attention in Asia
Simon Gerovich, CEO of Japanese company Metaplanet, said at the Bitcoin Asia conference in Hong Kong on August 28, 2026, that Bitcoin's time has come in Asia. He spoke about how his company turned around its fortunes by adding Bitcoin to its balance sheet.
Metaplanet originally ran hotels and technology services before pivoting to buy Bitcoin in 2024. It now holds about 43,000 BTC, worth roughly $3.3 billion at current prices. The Tokyo Stock Exchange lists the company.
Gerovich said past Bitcoin cycles were led by Western markets, but the first Asian cycle is now underway. "The only question left is who builds it. Will you?" he asked.
Key numbers
- Metaplanet holds 43,000 BTC, valued at about $3.3 billion.
- Japanese households hold roughly $14 trillion in financial assets, with about half in bank deposits earning almost nothing.
- Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Southeast Asia represent some of the deepest pools of patient savings in the world.
What the speaker pointed to
Gerovich argued that two trends are aligning in Asia. One is a shift away from hoarding cash. The other is new digital-asset rules coming to countries including Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore.
He said cash savings have stopped making sense for many people. "Japanese households hold roughly 14 trillion dollars in financial assets. About half of that sits in bank deposits, earning almost nothing," he said. He added that Korea, Southeast Asia, and wealth managed out of Hong Kong add to the pool.
Gerovich also claimed that Bitcoin's price bottom has formed. A tweet from Bitcoin Magazine quoted him as saying, "I believe the bottom is in. And I'm expecting a much brighter rest of the year." That is his personal view and not a confirmed market fact.
Why this matters for Asia
Metaplanet's pivot shows how an Asian company can give investors exposure to Bitcoin through regulated shares, much like a publicly traded fund. Gerovich called this approach a major opportunity for Asian firms and institutions as regulatory changes make it clearer how to operate.
He said the end of cash hoarding and the arrival of new rules are happening at the same time, and called it "the single biggest opportunity in Asian markets today."
What is still unclear
The article reports Gerovich's views. It does not confirm whether Bitcoin's price bottom has formed, nor does it show whether other Asian firms will follow Metaplanet's model. Regulatory changes across Asia are still developing.
