Morgan Stanley Pushes Tokenized Equities Timeline to Q1 2027

Q1 2027: A Later but More Realistic Start

Morgan Stanley now expects to support tokenized equities — digital representations of stocks traded on blockchain — on its alternative trading system by the first quarter of 2027. That is later than the second half of 2026 timeline the bank indicated earlier this year.

Amy Oldenburg, Morgan Stanley's head of digital asset strategy, told The Block during an interview at Token2049 that her team is still building the infrastructure needed to move forward.

She described the new window as more realistic given that client products do not yet exist and demand from institutional investors has not materialized.

What Oldenburg Told The Block

  • The bank needs actual products available before it can support them through its ATS, which matches orders outside of public stock exchanges like the Nasdaq.
  • Client demand is low because the tokenized equity products themselves are not yet on the market.
  • DTCC's tokenization service, launching at the end of October, is a significant milestone that could spur more activity.
  • The GENIUS Act, set to take effect in January, is another development the firm is closely tracking.
  • Regulatory clarity from the Federal Reserve remains an important factor for institutional engagement.

Wallets, Labs, and Regulatory Approvals

Morgan Stanley is developing proprietary wallet infrastructure that is not non-custodial but is designed to be hidden from end users, allowing clients to hold tokenized assets without managing complex crypto tools themselves.

The firm recently launched a Digital Asset Lab to test blockchain-native technologies in a controlled setting before anything reaches production. Separately, Morgan Stanley received conditional approval from the OCC earlier in 2026 to establish a digital trust for custodizing or staking digital assets on behalf of clients.

Market Size Expectations

When asked about predictions that the tokenized real-world asset market will reach between $3 trillion and $10 trillion by 2030, Oldenburg said Morgan Stanley expects the range to be hit "without question." She attributed the momentum to a wave of institutional announcements in the past year, calling it FOMO — the fear of missing out.

She also described longer-term opportunities in areas like private shares, structured notes, custom products, and private fund access, where blockchain could cut down on paperwork and administrative overhead. She summarized this direction as "the securitization of everything."

What Is Confirmed

  • Morgan Stanley has shifted its expected timeline for tokenized equities support to Q1 2027.
  • The firm is actively building infrastructure and has not yet launched a client-facing tokenized equity product.
  • Morgan Stanley holds conditional OCC approval for a digital trust for digital asset custody and staking.
  • The Digital Asset Lab is operational and used for testing, not production.

What Remains Unclear

  • No specific launch date within Q1 2027 has been given.
  • The scope of tokenized equity products Morgan Stanley will support at launch is not detailed.
  • It is not confirmed whether the GENIUS Act or DTCC's service will directly enable Morgan Stanley's rollout.
