New Midnight Vault Demo Reveals Hidden Reliance on External Signers for Ethereum Withdrawals
Experimental Vault Shows Privacy Tokens Depend on Outside Signers
SIG Network has released an experimental tool that connects the Midnight privacy system to the Ethereum blockchain. The tool shows that even when digital assets remain on Ethereum, users cannot easily move them without help from external signers. The system works by using a shared pool of signers to create the necessary digital signatures.
The main limitation of the demo is that a user must burn, or destroy, a privacy claim before a payment can be made. The transaction will not succeed without a signature from the external service.
How the Digital Vault Works
The system operates like a digital lockbox. Inside the lockbox, standard Ethereum tokens are held. Users hold privacy tokens that act like claims to those assets.
- Users start a transfer by sending a claim to the system.
- The claim is burned immediately, meaning it is destroyed.
- The external signing service receives a request to sign the transfer.
- Once signed, the transfer happens on the Ethereum blockchain.
Because the signing service is a group of separate individuals, no single person can act alone. This design prevents the service from moving the funds by itself.
How Failed Transfers Are Handled
If the transfer fails, the system has a way to fix it. The external service must report exactly what happened to the transaction. Once the system receives and checks this report, it can undo the burned claim. This puts the user's privacy token back into their wallet. However, if the service goes quiet and does not report the failure, the system cannot undo the burn. This leaves the user without their token.
Current Status and Future Plans
This demo is currently a test version running on a private network called a stagenet. It is not yet live on the main Ethereum network. SIG plans to add support for another blockchain called Tron by December 2026. Meanwhile, Charles Hoskinson, a prominent figure in the crypto space, publicly welcomed the Tron team to the Midnight project on October 21.
