NYSE and Blockchain.com Explore 24/7 Trading for Tokenized Stocks

NYSE partners with Blockchain.com for future token market

The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and crypto platform Blockchain.com have signed an agreement to explore connecting users to a planned 24-hour trading venue for tokenized US stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs). An ETF is a fund that tracks an index or asset and trades on an exchange like a stock.

The deal was announced on September 23. It aims to give Blockchain.com's users access to NYSE's upcoming digital market once it launches. However, the partnership depends on receiving regulatory approval, and no launch date has been set.

Key details of the agreement

  • Both companies signed a memorandum of understanding to study the connection.
  • The plan includes two-way sharing of market data between stocks and crypto.
  • Blockchain.com reports having over 44 million confirmed accounts.
  • The arrangement follows a similar strategic deal between NYSE parent ICE and crypto exchange OKX.

Context from NYSE's digital plans

NYSE revealed its digital platform plans in January. The venue is designed for continuous trading, fractional ownership, and immediate settlement using blockchain technology. Settlement refers to the final transfer of funds and assets after a trade. The platform will also allow trading with stablecoins, which are cryptocurrencies pegged to stable assets like the US dollar.

To support this infrastructure, NYSE named Securitize as its first digital transfer agent. This role involves managing the issuance and records of blockchain-based securities.

Market growth estimates

Citi Institute estimates that tokenized financial assets could grow to $5.5 trillion by 2030 in a base scenario, up from about $17 billion currently. A more optimistic forecast suggests the market could reach $8.2 trillion. The bank notes that public equities and government bonds are expected to drive this growth.

If 10% of US retail investors adopt on-chain products by the end of the decade, demand for tokenized public stocks alone could reach $2.6 trillion, according to Citi.

What remains uncertain

The trading link between Blockchain.com and NYSE is not yet active. The companies have not specified which securities will be available, which jurisdictions will qualify, or when the service might launch. Regulatory approval is required before any trading can begin.

Data sharing begins now

While the trading link awaits approval, the companies are already exchanging data. ICE Data Services will provide crypto pricing and analytics to its institutional clients. In return, Blockchain.com plans to integrate real-time stock data from ICE and NYSE into its app and its AI assistant, June.
