Papertrade Traders Lose $18.2 Million as Staking Rewards Hit $12.6 Million
Trading losses outpace staking rewards on Papertrade launch day
Traders on the Papertrade decentralized exchange lost about $18.2 million during its launch session on October 10, while cumulative staking rewards reached $12.6 million, according to the platform's public data feed.
Papertrade is a DeFi exchange built on the HyperEVM network that allows users to trade synthetic positions in Bitcoin and Ethereum with leverage of up to 1,000 times. Trading opened at 10 a.m. ET following a network upgrade.
The staking rewards figure represents roughly 69% of the total trading losses, but this does not mean individual traders received a refund. The two numbers measure different things.
How the rewards and losses work
- PAPER tokens are minted when traders lose money on the platform.
- Staking PAPER earns a share of the venue's fee distributions.
- Losing trades add to a common liquidity pool; winning trades draw from it.
- Stakers receive fees and any surplus above a $5 million pool threshold.
That structure means rewards are redistributed from overall trading activity to PAPER stakers, rather than being returned to the specific traders who suffered those losses. The $18.2 million in losses covers all traders collectively, not just those acquiring PAPER tokens, and excludes any staking income or token value.
Protocol snapshot at launch
Data captured around 1:35 p.m. ET showed approximately 3.17 billion PAPER tokens issued, with 3.09 billion already staked. The house liquidity pool held about $5.01 million, and there was no queued payout debt reported.
Papertrade's rollout rules currently allow staking and unstaking but do not permit transfers between wallets. Wallet-to-wallet transfers are expected in a later phase, though no fixed date has been set.
Why this structure matters for users
Some users may have deliberately lost money to acquire PAPER tokens as part of the launch strategy. However, the rewards generated by staking those tokens come from the platform's overall fee and surplus pool, not from a dedicated refund mechanism tied to individual losses.
Researchers and data sources, including PaperDash, caution against treating protocol-level staking reward totals as a measure of what any single wallet has earned.
What remains unclear
No official timeline has been given for when wallet transfers will be enabled. The long-term sustainability of the reward model and its impact on trader behavior also remain to be seen.
What happens next
Papertrade has not announced a specific next step beyond the pending transfer feature, which will be introduced in a future phase without a confirmed date.
