Sophon Sets Nov. 25 Deadline for Users to Withdraw Assets Before Mainnet Shutdown
Sophon tells users to pull funds by Nov. 25
Sophon has set Nov. 25 as the deadline for users to withdraw their assets before its mainnet is shut down. A mainnet is the main, live version of a blockchain network.
The project said on Monday that it will start shutting down key infrastructure and related websites on that date. Assets left on Sophon Chain could become permanently inaccessible, according to the team.
The move follows a June announcement that Sophon would abandon its Ethereum layer-2 blockchain and shift its operations to Base. A layer-2 network is a separate chain built on top of Ethereum to handle transactions.
What users need to withdraw
- Sophon asked users to remove any Sophon (SOPH), Ether (ETH), USDC and other assets from the chain.
- Users were also told to claim any outstanding staking rewards or Guardian rewards.
- The deadline for doing so is Nov. 25, when key infrastructure and related websites begin shutting down.
Why Sophon is closing the chain
Sophon launched as a zero-knowledge-powered layer-2 network focused on consumer applications such as gaming, entertainment and artificial intelligence. A zero-knowledge network is a blockchain design that aims to prove transactions are valid without revealing all their details.
In June, its developers said the cost of keeping a standalone blockchain running no longer justified the benefits. They said the team would instead focus on consumer finance and AI applications on Base.
A similar wind-down at Abstract
Sophon's shutdown comes after a similar announcement from Abstract, a consumer-focused Ethereum layer-2 network built by Igloo, the parent company of Pudgy Penguins. Abstract said on Oct. 6 that it would close on Dec. 15, after Igloo lost tens of millions of dollars supporting the network.
Funding raised by Sophon
Cointelegraph previously reported that Sophon raised $60 million through a node sale in 2024, after a separate $10 million funding round.
What is confirmed
Sophon set a Nov. 25 deadline for withdrawals and said it will begin shutting down key infrastructure and related websites on that date. The team asked users to withdraw SOPH, ETH, USDC and other assets and to claim outstanding staking or Guardian rewards. The project announced in June that it would leave its Ethereum layer-2 chain and move to Base. Abstract, backed by Igloo, said on Oct. 6 it would close on Dec. 15 after Igloo lost tens of millions of dollars, and Sophon raised $60 million in a 2024 node sale following a separate $10 million round.
Why it matters
Any assets that remain on Sophon Chain after Nov. 25 risk becoming permanently inaccessible, according to the team. That gives users a fixed window to move funds and claim rewards.
