Strategy Adds 1,665 Bitcoin to Holdings, Total Reaches 847,666 BTC

Strategy expands Bitcoin reserves with latest purchase

Strategy has bought an additional 1,665 bitcoins (BTC) for approximately $142.7 million. The purchases took place between September 21 and September 27. This brings the company's total Bitcoin holdings to 847,666 BTC.

The acquisition was funded using money raised from selling the company's Class A common stock, known by the ticker MSTR. A portion of the funds also came from the company's cash reserves.

Key figures from the new acquisition

  • The company paid an average price of $85,681 for each Bitcoin in this batch.
  • Total holdings are now valued at around $70.6 billion based on recent prices.
  • The average cost for all 847,666 BTC held is $75,437 per coin.
  • The total amount spent on all holdings, including fees, is roughly $64 billion.
  • This amount represents more than 4% of the total 21 million Bitcoin supply limit.

Funding details and recent stock activity

According to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the latest Bitcoin purchase used $103.5 million from MSTR stock sales and $48.1 million from USD cash reserves. In the same week, the company repurchased 1,534,530 preferred shares called STRC for about $151.7 million.

Last week, Strategy sold 1,469,165 MSTR shares for approximately $246.2 million. As of September 27, the company still had $18.84 billion worth of MSTR shares available to issue and sell under its current program.

Leadership comments and market context

Michael Saylor, the company's co-founder and executive chairman, stated the current value and cost basis of the holdings. On Sunday, he shared a chart on social media platform X with the caption "A little more orange," referring to the color associated with Bitcoin. While such posts often precede purchase announcements, the company's buying pace has varied recently.

According to data from Bitcoin Treasuries, 195 public companies have adopted strategies to acquire Bitcoin. Strategy holds the largest amount among them. Other major holders include Twenty One, Metaplanet, MARA, and Bitcoin Standard Treasury Company.

Dividend proposals and stock performance

Strategy has proposed changing the dividend schedule for several preferred stocks (STRC, STRD, STRF, and STRK) to daily payments. Shareholders will vote on this proposal on October 28. If approved, STRC would begin paying daily dividends starting November 1, with other stocks following in January. The proposal does not change the dividend rates or increase total obligations.

Strategy's stock price rose 16.1% in the week leading up to September 27, closing at $158.61. Despite this weekly gain, the stock remains down 65% over the past year, though it is up 2.6% for the year to date. Bitcoin itself rose 3.6% during the same one-year period.

Current cash position

As of September 27, the company reported having $5.02 billion in its USD Reserve and $1 billion in USD Cash. These funds support ongoing operations and potential future asset purchases.
