Strategy's stock chart nears a golden cross weeks after bitcoin's
Strategy's chart moves toward a golden cross
Strategy (MSTR), the largest publicly listed buyer of bitcoin, is close to a chart pattern called a golden cross, weeks after bitcoin's own price chart flashed the same signal. CoinDesk reported on October 19, 2026 that the crossover could happen as soon as Monday.
A golden cross happens when a security's 50-day average price rises above its 200-day average. The 50-day and 200-day averages are simply the average price over the past 50 and 200 trading days. Some traders read the change as a decisive shift toward stronger momentum that can lead to a longer rally. It is a widely watched chart reading, not a guarantee of what prices will do.
Key numbers
- Strategy holds $69.81 billion in bitcoin, according to CoinDesk.
- MSTR closed at $135.98 in the latest stock quote cited by CoinDesk.
- Bitcoin traded around $82,000, up nearly 5% since its golden cross was confirmed on September 8, 2026.
- Bitcoin's price reached a high of more than $87,000 early in October, after starting from lows under $60,000 in July.
The two earlier crosses and what followed
Strategy began buying bitcoin for its balance sheet in August 2020. Since then, its stock has printed two golden crosses, and large rallies followed both, CoinDesk reported.
The first came on September 15, 2020, when the stock was around $15.57. It climbed to $127.29 by February 2021, a 717% gain. A death cross, the opposite pattern, arrived in January 2022, with the stock at $46.83 — still about triple its level when the bullish signal first appeared.
The second came on March 2, 2023, at $25.29. The shares peaked at $473.83 in November 2024, up 1,774%. When the death cross arrived in October 2025, MSTR was at $328.40, still 1,199% higher.
The signal has a mixed track record
The same report cautions that the signal is not especially reliable. Using data it analyzed itself, CoinDesk found that MSTR's shares have registered 19 golden crosses since 1999.
On 11 of those occasions the stock was higher three months later, and on only 10 occasions was it higher 12 months later — a 50% accuracy rate. The median 12-month return after a cross was just 3.3%. The two worst crosses, in 2001 and 2007, were followed by a 61% loss.
Bitcoin has already printed the pattern
Bitcoin confirmed its own golden cross on September 8, 2026. Since then it has risen by nearly 5% to about $82,000, extending a rally from July lows under $60,000. The price touched a high above $87,000 early in October.
What is still unclear
Whether Strategy's stock will repeat its earlier pattern is unknown. CoinDesk explicitly states that it remains to be seen if MSTR follows bitcoin's lead. The historical gains described above are past events, and the reliability data in the same report shows the signal has often failed to deliver gains a year later.
Why the pattern draws attention
Strategy is the largest publicly listed accumulator of bitcoin, so its stock is watched alongside the cryptocurrency itself. A golden cross is one of the most recognized momentum readings in chart analysis, which is why traders track when it appears. The supplied material links the pattern to past price moves but does not establish that it causes them.
