TRON is developing a plan to make its blockchain resistant to quantum computers, but a draft design reveals that some wallets might not be able to update their security keys if certain features are turned off by the network.

The plan allows the network's validators to disable quantum-signature schemes separately. This could lock out wallets that depend on a disabled scheme for key management, even if they can still make payments through other permissions.

How Governance and Account Permissions Interact

TRON is governed by 27 elected Super Representatives who vote on proposals. The draft includes separate activation switches for each quantum-signature scheme.

At the account level, keys have weights, and permissions have thresholds. A signature from a disabled scheme is rejected, so transactions must use only active signatures. This means a key that can send payments might not have the power to replace the account's keys, as owner permission is required for that.

Current Testing on Nile Testnet

The Nile testnet released software on June 30 that implemented Falcon and ML-DSA signatures. As of September 12, Falcon was enabled (getAllowFnDsa512 = 1), but ML-DSA had no activation value, and the mainnet had neither setting.

Developers said in a July 15 call that the timing for mainnet activation is undecided. TIP-899 remains in draft status.

On August 8, 2026, Justin Sun stated that his goal is for TRON to become the first quantum-resistant blockchain network. This ambition provides context for the ongoing migration design.

It is confirmed that TRON's draft quantum-signature design could prevent key replacement if a scheme is disabled. The recovery path depends on owner authority, which may not be available in all wallet configurations, such as when a key is only for payments.

What is still unclear is when, or if, this design will be activated on the main network. The testnet has partial activation, but no timeline has been set for mainnet.
