FBI takes control of fundraising websites and servers

The United States Department of Justice (DOJ) announced on Wednesday that it has seized more than $560,000 in cryptocurrency intended for Hamas. In addition to the funds, the FBI took control of several website domains and servers that the group used to recruit supporters and raise money.

Investigators targeted the infrastructure supporting the Al-Qassam Brigades, which is the military wing of Hamas. Specifically, agents took over the domain Alqassam.ps. This move allowed the government to stop new donations from reaching the group and to gather information on those attempting to send funds.

The DOJ released five affidavits detailing the operation. Three of these documents, dated between March and October 2025, focus on the warrants used to seize the cryptocurrency. The other two documents, from the summer of 2026, explain how the government took over the technical infrastructure used by the group.

According to court documents, investigators used human sources to find and track "rotating" crypto addresses. These are digital destinations for funds that change frequently to hide the identity of the receiver. These addresses were shared through encrypted group chats and a specific fundraising website to solicit money from donors.

How the investigation was conducted

The operation relied on tracing digital wallets—software or devices that store the keys needed to move cryptocurrency. By monitoring these wallets and the accounts linked to them, agents identified a system that had been moving significant amounts of money for nearly two years. The first part of the operation successfully recovered approximately $201,400 from addresses allegedly controlled by Hamas.

Why the domain takeover matters

By taking control of the group's main website, the FBI did more than just stop the flow of money. The department stated that the operation provided the bureau with data on thousands of people who tried to use both cryptocurrency and traditional payment methods to support the organization. This information could assist in ongoing efforts to track and stop the financing of similar groups.
