Vitalik Buterin warns against rushing wallet migrations despite AI crypto threats

Don't rush your wallet, Buterin says

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin warned that while the crypto industry should take AI-driven risks to cryptography seriously, rushing to move funds to new wallets is not the answer.

In a Wednesday post on X, Buterin said he has lost more money to botched wallet migrations than to hacks. He advised that keeping funds in unused addresses is a sensible precaution only if the move is straightforward.

Key warnings about AI and cryptography

  • Buterin said AI-accelerated math is a key reason widely used cryptographic methods could fall faster than expected.
  • Most planning assumes elliptic curve methods could break before quantum computers arrive, while hash-based and lattice-based systems remain safe. Buterin cautioned that lattice security may face serious challenges from AI advances over the next two years.
  • He specifically flagged ML-DSA, fully homomorphic encryption, and lattice schemes as core areas of risk.
  • For privacy protocols, he recommended favoring offchain transfer of encrypted data instead of putting it onchain.

Drake called for "bunker mode" planning

Buterin's comments responded to an earlier post by Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake, who urged the industry to start preparing for a worst-case scenario.

Drake said the Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm, known as ECDSA, could potentially be broken before "q-day" — the point when quantum computers become powerful enough to break widely used public-key cryptography. In a worst case, he said such a breakthrough could happen within months rather than years.

Drake recommended moving funds in a controlled way to fresh addresses that keep their public keys hidden, and warned holders not to panic or rush.

OpenAI math push raises urgency

The warnings come as OpenAI published hundreds of mathematical manuscripts produced by an internal AI model on Tuesday. Drake described the release as evidence that "mathematical superintelligence is upon us."

What is confirmed

  • Buterin warned against rushing wallet migrations and said past misconfigured upgrades have cost him more than hacks.
  • He said the industry should treat AI-accelerated math risks to cryptography seriously.
  • Drake called for bunker mode planning and warned ECDSA could break before quantum computers arrive.
  • OpenAI published AI-generated math manuscripts, which Drake cited as evidence of rapid progress.

What is still unclear

  • It is unconfirmed whether ECDSA will actually be broken soon or whether lattice-based cryptography will hold against AI advances.
  • No official timeline exists for when such risks might materialize.

Why this matters for crypto holders

If widely used cryptography were compromised, it could undermine the security of addresses and transactions across blockchains. Buterin's guidance suggests the priority should be careful, deliberate preparation rather than panic-driven moves that could themselves lead to lost funds.
