Typing and Computer Skill

You need elementary knowledge of computer operation. You must also be able to type on a computer at 20 words per minute in English or 10 words per minute in Bengali. While filling the form, choose your typing option — English or Bengali. Your computer and typing ability is checked only after you clear Part-I and Part-II.

Nationality and Language Rules

You should be a citizen of India — either natural or by registration — or a national declared eligible by the Government of India. The second group needs a certificate of eligibility from the Government. Such candidates can sit for the exam, but the appointment offer comes only after the certificate is issued.

You must be able to read, write and speak Bengali. This rule does not apply if your mother tongue is Nepali. If your mother tongue is neither Bengali nor Nepali, your Bengali knowledge is tested at the computer and typing test stage. A poor or average score there can lead to cancellation of your candidature. Prepare your documents early — use the WBPSC exam resources page to keep your papers ready.

Reservation

  • SC, ST and OBC (non-creamy layer) candidates of West Bengal get reservation. Candidates from these categories who belong to other States are treated as general candidates.
  • PwBD candidates with 40% or more disability, and Ex-Servicemen, are covered.
  • Meritorious Sportspersons from International Competition, National Competition, Inter-University Tournament and National Sports/Games for School Education are eligible in the 20 listed sports, including Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Cricket, Football, Hockey, Swimming, Table Tennis, Volleyball, Tennis, Weightlifting, Wrestling, Boxing, Cycling, Gymnastics, Judo, Rifle Shooting, Kabaddi, Kho-Kho and Archery.
  • EWS candidates of West Bengal get reservation. EWS candidates from other States are treated as general candidates.

PwBD reservation (40% and above) is decided as per Notification No. Labr/85-Emp/EC/1M-01/2025, dated 25.05.2026.
