Zcash Jumps 12% as Developers Set NU7 Activation at Block 3,543,405

Zcash gains about 12% as NU7 gets a target block

Zcash (ZEC), a cryptocurrency built around privacy features, rose about 12% in 24 hours after developers agreed on the block where the network's NU7 upgrade should go live on the main network.

The token traded near $1,270 at last look on Wednesday, according to CoinGecko. The move followed a Tuesday GitHub proposal from Zcash developer Sean Bowe that set activation at block 3,543,405, a point expected around Nov. 5.

Zcash's value is up more than 148% so far this year.

Key numbers behind the upgrade plan

  • Price move: about 12% higher over 24 hours, trading near $1,270 at last look on Wednesday.
  • Year-to-date gain: more than 148%.
  • Activation block: 3,543,405, expected around Nov. 5.
  • Block time change: NU7 aims to cut the target block time by two-thirds, from 75 seconds to 25 seconds.
  • Readiness: six of 12 tasks completed on the Zcash Foundation's NU7 readiness tracker.

What the developer proposal says

In the Tuesday GitHub proposal, Bowe wrote "Height agreed at ZIP editor meeting," and added that the team still needed to finalize the upgrade specifications before merging the proposal. Two developers approved the changes.

The Zakura NU7 dashboard also lists the upgrade as pending on mainnet at block 3,543,405, with activation expected around Nov. 5.

Testing underway since early October

The change from a 75-second block time has been under testing since early October. Zcash uses zero-knowledge proofs, a method that lets one party prove a statement is true without revealing the underlying data.

A shorter block time means transactions can receive confirmations more quickly.

Remaining tasks and open questions

The Zcash Foundation's NU7 readiness tracker showed six of 12 tasks completed. The remaining work involves Zebra node synchronization issues and mainnet preparations.

Developers have not confirmed whether these outstanding issues could affect the planned activation date. That leaves the exact timing of the upgrade unconfirmed.
