Zcash Reaches $1,000 Milestone Following 20% Price Increase
Zcash briefly tops $1,020 in daily surge
Zcash (ZEC) rose about 20% over a 24-hour period to reach the $1,000 level on Friday. The cryptocurrency, which focuses on transaction privacy, briefly traded as high as $1,023 after starting the day near $828. This move pushed the total market value of all Zcash tokens toward $17 billion.
The rally has contributed to a monthly gain of approximately 94% for ZEC. Over the past year, the token has increased in value by more than 2,300%, making it one of the strongest performers among major digital assets.
Significant market data
- Zcash trading volume reached approximately $1.2 billion in 24 hours.
- About $34.5 million in bearish bets were forced to close.
- Open interest in futures contracts climbed to roughly $2.3 billion.
- The token's price has nearly doubled over the last 30 days.
Institutional interest and fund listings
Several institutional developments likely influenced the recent price movement. In late August, Grayscale launched a spot Zcash ETF on the NYSE Arca exchange under the ticker symbol ZCSH. An ETF, or exchange-traded fund, is a type of investment fund that can be bought and sold on a traditional stock market like a company share. This listing allows anyone with a regular brokerage account to invest in Zcash.
Additionally, Digital Currency Group, the parent company of Grayscale, was recently reported to be in non-binding talks to purchase 200,000 ZEC tokens through a subsidiary.
How short sellers impacted the rally
The sudden price increase forced the closure of many leveraged trading positions. Approximately $36.6 million in Zcash positions were liquidated, with $34.5 million belonging to traders who had "shorted" the token. Shorting is a way of betting that a price will go down.
A short liquidation happens when a rising price forces a trader to close their position to prevent further losses. To close these positions, traders must buy the token back, which can create even more upward pressure on the price.
Faster transaction speeds for mobile users
The Zcash network has also seen technical improvements recently. Developers working on Zakura, a Zcash node launched in July, released new tools this month that significantly improve speed. A node is a computer that runs the software required to operate a cryptocurrency network.
These updates have reduced the time it takes to build a private transaction on a mobile wallet from over three seconds to under 200 milliseconds. Developers stated this improvement is part of an effort to make the network fast enough for everyday payments.
