Cease and Desist Letter Generator
What this generator does
This page builds a cease and desist letter from a form. You enter the recipient, the type of conduct, the action you want stopped, a deadline and your own contact details. The page writes a plain-text letter that you can edit, copy or download. It runs entirely in the browser. The result is a template for a demand or warning letter, not legal advice and not a court filing.
When a cease and desist letter is appropriate
People use these letters to ask someone to stop harassment, trademark infringement, defamation, copyright misuse, debt-collection abuse or a breach of an agreement. A letter can document that you asked for the conduct to stop before you take further steps. It is not a substitute for a court order, a police report or a lawyer's assessment. If you are in immediate danger, contact the appropriate emergency service rather than relying on a letter.
Letter types
The type menu includes harassment, FDCPA, trademark, defamation, copyright, breach and other. The choice changes the framing and some wording, but it does not perform a legal analysis. FDCPA letters relate to debt collection, trademark and copyright letters relate to intellectual property, and breach letters relate to an agreement. Pick the closest category and then edit the body so it accurately describes your situation.
Conduct and desired action
The conduct field should describe what happened, when it happened and why you want it stopped. Use dates, names and specific examples where you have them. The desired action field should say what you want the recipient to do: stop contacting you, remove a post, cease using a mark, pay a debt or take another concrete step. Avoid vague demands that cannot be verified. A clear letter is easier to answer and easier to rely on later.
Deadline options and a wording issue
The deadline menu offers 5, 10, 14, 30 or a custom number of days. The default is 10. The current template may express the 14-day and 30-day choices as business days rather than calendar days. Read the generated text and correct the wording if the distinction matters. A deadline should be realistic and consistent with any statute or agreement that applies. Do not shorten a legally required period because the menu offers a shorter option.
Sender details and signature
You must provide your name and email, and you can add a phone number, address, date, jurisdiction and signature format. The default signature uses /s/ followed by your name; an electronic signature option is also available. A letter usually needs a way for the recipient to respond and a clear identification of the sender. If you are represented by a lawyer, use the lawyer's details and follow their instructions instead of sending a pro se letter.
Advanced options
The advanced section can add an evidence reference, a legal warning, a preservation request, a copy to counsel, a jurisdiction line and an extra clause. The legal warning is on by default. Do not add a warning you do not intend to follow. A preservation request asks the recipient not to destroy evidence, but it does not itself create a legal hold. Keep the letter consistent with the advice you have received.
Output, copy and download
The generated letter appears in an editable text area. You can revise the wording before sending. Copy puts the text on the clipboard, and the download button saves cease-and-desist.txt. The page does not email the letter, post it or file it. You still need to choose a delivery method and keep a copy for your records. A downloaded text file is easy to edit, but it is not a signed PDF.
Legal limits and disclaimers
This is a template generator. It does not know the law of your jurisdiction, the strength of your claim or the deadlines that apply. It does not create an attorney-client relationship. A cease and desist letter can have legal consequences, and an inaccurate or overbroad demand can weaken your position. Have a lawyer review the letter before sending it if the matter is serious, especially for intellectual property, debt collection or an ongoing dispute.
Evidence and jurisdiction
Keep copies of the messages, posts, agreements, invoices or other material that supports your account. Do not alter the originals. The jurisdiction field is a label, not a legal analysis; the relevant court or agency may be different. If you are unsure where a dispute belongs, get local advice. A letter that cites the wrong law or the wrong deadline can be worse than a simple, factual request.
Delivery and follow-up
Choose a delivery method that gives you proof of sending, such as tracked mail or a dated email with a delivery record. Keep the receipt. A letter is often the start of a process, not the end. Decide in advance what you will do if the recipient ignores it or responds. Do not threaten action you are not prepared to take. If the matter is urgent, consider whether a court order or a report to an authority is more appropriate than a letter.
Privacy and sensitive information
The form runs in the browser, but the letter may contain personal data, allegations or confidential facts. Do not paste information you are not prepared to see in a downloaded file or a shared device. Clear the form after you finish. If you are sending the letter, share only what is necessary to identify the conduct and the requested action. A public web page is not a private legal file.
Common problems
If the letter is too vague, add dates, examples and a specific request. If the deadline wording is wrong, edit it before sending. If the signature block is incomplete, add your contact details. If the tone is too aggressive, revise it. If you do not know whether the letter is legally sufficient, do not send it without advice. If the download is empty, generate the letter first.
What not to do
Do not send a letter you have not read. Do not claim a law applies when you are not sure. Do not use a deadline that conflicts with a statute or contract. Do not threaten criminal action to collect a debt. Do not include unnecessary personal data. Do not assume the letter is confidential. Do not treat the generated text as a substitute for a lawyer.
