What the tool does

This page crops, resizes, converts and compresses an image for a Facebook-style placement. The selector contains stored presets for profile pictures, link previews, feed posts, stories, covers, group covers, events and instant articles. Pick the row that matches where the image will appear, then crop and process.

It is a size and compression helper, not a Facebook uploader. It does not connect to your account, publish anything or read your profile. The output is a file you upload yourself.

Profile, link, feed and story are different jobs

A profile picture is square and small. It is displayed as a circle in many places, so keep the face or logo centred and leave a margin; corners may be cropped by the interface. A link preview is wide, and the platform may crop it again when it builds a card.

A feed portrait post uses a tall 4:5 frame, while a story uses a full vertical 9:16 frame. Text near the top or bottom of a story can be covered by the interface. A cover photo is wide and short, so a tall subject will lose most of its height.

Start from an image that is at least as large as the preset. A 600 by 315 file cannot be enlarged to 1920 by 1005 without losing sharpness. If the original is small, choose a smaller placement rather than upscaling.

How the crop and compression work

Select the preset, upload the file and position the crop box. The box is fitted to the preset's ratio. The tool then resizes the selection to the stored width and height, converts it to JPEG and reduces quality until it fits the stored size range.

If the image is already smaller than the target, check the preview for softness. If it is much larger, the crop is the important step: choose what to keep before the compressor reduces detail. A sharp, simple composition survives compression better than a busy one.

Stored preset caveat

These figures are the values stored in this tool. Facebook itself resizes and re-encodes uploads and does not publish a single KB requirement for every placement. The stored ranges are useful for a downstream form, an app or an internal upload that asks for a specific size, but they should not be presented as Facebook's official limits.

If the destination gives you a different pixel size or file weight, follow that destination. The table above is a convenience preset, not a live copy of Facebook's current documentation.

Common problems

A profile picture that looked centred may appear off-centre after the circular crop. A link image may lose its title area when the platform overlays text. A story may hide its bottom caption behind the reply bar. Preview the placement, not just the file.

The other common failure is a file that is too small in bytes. A flat logo compressed to 10 KB can fall below the stored minimum for a link image. Raise the quality or choose a preset with a lower floor.

Privacy and limits

The image is processed to produce the resized copy. Do not upload private photos or documents you are not authorised to use. The page does not connect to Facebook and does not store a gallery of your results.

One image is processed per run. The tool does not schedule posts, write captions or publish to a page. It only returns a file.

Choosing the best source image

Start with the largest original you have. A profile picture is displayed small, but a sharp source still looks better after the platform compresses it again. Avoid screenshots of screenshots, images saved from a chat app and anything that has already been through several rounds of compression.

For a face, centre the eyes and leave a margin around the head. For a logo, keep the mark inside the safe area and avoid placing it in a corner that a circular mask may cut. Text inside the image is risky: it can be cropped, softened or covered by the interface. Use the platform caption instead when possible.

Stored size ranges and compression

Each preset has a minimum and maximum KB value. The tool lowers JPEG quality until the file fits the maximum, but it cannot add detail to reach a minimum. A flat logo may fall below the floor at a low quality, while a detailed photo may need a much lower quality to stay under the ceiling.

Aim for a file inside the band rather than an exact number. If the result is far below the minimum, raise the quality or use a larger source. If it is far above, crop tighter or choose a smaller placement.

Cover photos, group covers and events

A desktop cover and a mobile cover are not the same shape. The stored desktop preset is 820 by 312, while the mobile preset is 640 by 360. Keep the subject and any text near the centre so both crops retain the important part.

A group cover is wider and taller, and an event image is wider still. These placements are often displayed with interface elements over the edges, so leave a margin. Do not reuse a profile picture as a cover without recropping; the proportions are completely different. Check both cover variants before publishing, not just the one you designed the image on.

A quick check on a phone screen catches most of these layout problems early.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

Short answers for the questions users ask before trusting the result.

No. They are stored presets in this tool. Facebook re-encodes uploads and does not publish one KB rule for every placement.

The stored profile presets are 170 by 170 and 180 by 180 pixels. Keep the subject centred because the interface may display a circle.

The stored options are 600 by 315 and 1200 by 630 pixels. The larger file is safer for high-density screens.

Yes, the selector includes a 1080 by 1920 stored variant. Keep text away from the top and bottom edges.

No. It only creates a file. You upload it yourself.

Some stored presets have a minimum KB value. A very simple image can fall below it; raise the quality or use a different preset.

JPEG, matching the stored presets.

The file is processed for the request and returned as a download. The page does not connect to your account or keep a gallery.
